The sound of the steel door opening and closing echoed through the concrete interrogation room. The air was cool and damp—a glum place to spend any amount of time.

“Daniel!” Doctor Horchoff said gleefully the instant he walked into the room. “I didn’t think they’d actually send you in here.”

“They seem to think our relationship would make you more likely to tell us what we want to know,” Daniel responded soberly as he leaned up against the back wall while Eva took a seat in the chair across from Horchoff.

As she took her seat she sent a warning glance in Daniel’s direction, reminding him that it was her job to do the talking, not his.

Horchoff laughed at Daniel’s response. “Unfortunately you will find that my son keeps me in the dark on most things. Like you, he finds that my personal attachment to my work hinders my ability to keep secrets.”

Daniel stared intently at the scruffy old doctor. His long white hairs were less organized than a bird’s nest, which combined with his patchy grey stubble made him look homeless. He seemed way too content given his current situation.

“You’re going to tell me he left you behind on that island without any inclination as to where he was going?” Eva asked the doctor, officially kicking off the interrogation.

“That is correct,” Horchoff responded confidently.

Eva seemed unable to believe his response even though Horchoff seemed to be telling the truth. “How were you supposed to meet up with him if he didn’t tell you where he was going?”

Horchoff shrugged as if Eva had it all wrong. “There were no immediate plans to meet up with him again. I was just supposed to stay behind to delete what files were left in the system, and then I was going to return home to Chicago. If Gordie needed me for anything after that, he’d know where to find me.”

Daniel rolled his eyes and let out an audible sigh. He believed that every word the doctor was saying was true.

Again, Eva shot Daniel a nasty glance, unappreciative of his non-verbal intrusion.

“You have to have some inclination as to what he’s planning,” she pressed the doctor further.

“Some,” Horchoff agreed, his face suggesting that he had nothing to hide. “But no more than what you probably already know.”

“And what is that?”

“That he’s going to use the soldiers I created for him to overthrow the United States government.”

There was a cold silence in the room following Horchoff’s statement—one that Daniel could feel reverberating into the next room with Charlie and Harvell. Until now they had only assumed that the attack was imminent—now they knew for sure.

“When and where?” Eva demanded.

“Oh, that he wouldn’t tell me,” Horchoff responded candidly. “I had no reason to know when and where, I merely provided him with the how.”

“The soldiers you spoke of,” Eva clarified. “They’re like Daniel.”

Horchoff stared up at the ceiling, as if pondering the most precise way to respond. “Well…sort of. Similar—but not really.”

Daniel cocked his head a bit, curious as to what changes Doctor Horchoff had made to his procedure and how they related to Norma.
