Chapter 31 – Thane

I gritted my teeth as the raw emotions filtering over the connection from both Tag and Stretch had me reading the same email for the seventh time. I’d never had so many unanswered emails in a twenty-four hour period. Never thought anything could take that top priority in my mind.

Hollyn was it. The only thing that could ruin my focus on work. Shift my brain from the puzzles of ruling the telecommunications industry.

“Are you getting anything done over there or are you just peeping on your brother and your mate?” Drace asked from the couch. “These moony sighs make me feel like I’m back in high school.”

I grimaced on a laugh. She wasn’t wrong. I felt like a hormonal teenager again. I shut my computer, resigned to the fact that no work was going to be done until after I could sate myself in Stretch’s body.

I moved back to the couch, flicked my gaze to the TV. Game of Thrones was playing. I winced. Not the best show to take my mind off sex. “Seriously?” I asked her.

She smiled, wiggled her eyebrows. “Hey, I don’t even get the mental connection. I’m dying over here.” She pulled her legs up under her body, squished a pillow to her belly and laid her head on the arm of the chair.

“So no mates for you yet?” I asked, needing to focus on something other than the graphic sex scene playing on the screen.

Drace shook her head. “Nope. You guys are one lucky group.”

I didn’t say anything, knew we were indeed lucky. “What’s it like growing up in a thunder?”

Drace smiled, looked over at me. “Both the best and worst thing you can imagine about an extended family.” She chuckled. “Everyone knew everything immediately. There were no secrets. Nothing private or sacred in terms of what you kept just for yourself. But there was also a safety, a comfort in that. Everyone knew everything and still loved you. Wanted to be around you. Played with you.” She bumped a shoulder into the air. “As much as I wanted to kill certain people when I was younger, I don’t know that I would be who I am today without them in my life.”

I smiled. I’d never known any of that. With the knowledge that our father was hanging on by a thread, that our daily life was never mundane—but only in the terrifying sense of inconsistency—made each day a practice in survival. As much as it killed me to have my father gone, I experienced my first true taste of safety on his death.

“Thane?” Drace called. For what sounded like more than once.

I shook my head. “Sorry, I zoned out. What did you say?”

She smiled at me. “How was it growing up with three versions of yourself?”

I laughed. “Stretch called us replicas when she first found out about me being a triplet. Apparently, there weren’t too many multiple births in the Valley.”

Drace laughed. “She’s an odd duck, your Hollyn. But stars I would love to swim around in her mind sometime.
