Hekate of the three-ways

Of the Heavens, Earth & Sea

Saffron-cloaked Goddess of the Heavens

Nightgoing one, Protectress of dogs

Unconquerable Queen

I ask you to be present now at this my sacred rite

To bless me and protect me!

Spend some time researching the Goddess or God you are looking to invoke, research their mythologies, their symbols and their roles within the pantheon in which they originate. Including symbolism and titles of a deity in your invocations can be a great way of making it a more powerful and personal experience. Of course through knowing more about the deities you work with, it also becomes easier for you to foster a closer relationship with them.

When you invoke a Goddess or God you should visualise that deity in the way they have usually been portrayed in the art of their culture. E.g. Artemis was depicted as a tall and beautiful maiden in a white hunting tunic carrying a bow with her quiver of arrows on her back. See the deity coming to your circle from their realm and standing over your circle, so their presence fills the space. So e.g. for chthonian deities you may see the deity rising from the ground, for stellar, solar and lunar deities they may descend from the sky, etc. The ancient Egyptians saw their deities as standing about fifteen foot (4.5m) high, which can be a good guide to work with. Certainly they should be larger than the Guardians of the Watchtowers and Archangels, who are normally visualized as being around nine foot tall.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn used a technique where the deity who was invoked was visualized approaching the magickian from behind, and then seen ‘stepping in’ to the aura of the magickian, so the deity literally enfolded or overshadowed the magickian with their presence and energy.

It is preferable to memorise the invocation if you can, as you can focus more on the energy of the deity and visualizing them if you are not reading from a piece of paper. With practice you will find you can do invocations spontaneously without needing to prepare, especially if they are for deities that you have worked with a lot and are familiar with.
