Chapter Fourteen

The next day, after putting Sarah down for a nap, Molly finally decided to go up to the studio. She still didn’t have any good ideas of what to paint but she wasn’t going to get many down in the kitchen, watching cartoon romances.

Once there she found herself unable to concentrate on the blank canvas sitting on the easel. A comfortable chair was positioned by one of the windows. Molly sat in it and contemplated the view. Out the window lay the entire valley, where the heart of the technology world lay. Somewhere in that uninspiring collection of block-shaped buildings Greg was making a difference.

He had been up and out of the house before she’d awakened this morning. Sarah, still dressed in her pajamas, had been eating cold cereal and watching cartoons when Molly came downstairs. Molly immediately marched the child upstairs and had her find some clothes. She seemed a lot better, except for that nagging cough of hers. Funny how Sarah always seemed to have these coughing spells when Molly entered the room.

A note left on the counter informed her that Greg had a breakfast meeting and thus had left early. He might be home for dinner but he wasn’t certain. It depended on how his day went.

Great. Again she’d had trouble sleeping after his “sweet dreams, love” comment but he had no problem getting out and about. Perhaps this was his idea of psychological torture. He made love to her on the phone but wasn’t around to do it in person.

Well, it was working. Heaven knows she was thinking about him.

Again she eyed the blank canvas on her easel, primed and waiting for inspiration to strike. Maybe some music would help. Looking through the CDs, she found an old seventies disco album and, whimsically, she put it on. The sound system in the room was fantastic. She couldn’t resist the driving beat and found herself dancing along with the music.

The song ended and she heard a giggle from the doorway. Awakened from her nap, Sarah was watching, a big grin on her face. Molly grabbed the child’s hands and began to lead her around the floor to the beat of the next song, Sarah squealing in pleasure.

Laughing, Sarah broke away and gyrated in front of the big mirrors. The double likeness of the child and her reflection made Molly suddenly grab her camera and shoot a couple of quick shots. The Polaroid pictures of the little girl dancing with her reflection were stunning. Molly immediately grabbed the best one and attached it to her clipboard.

Finally inspiration had struck. She quickly sketched the images from the picture, the spirit of dance reflected in a mirror. Maybe in pastels, with some sort of costume rather than the t-shirt and jeans the child currently wore. Hmm, “Spirit of Dance, Reflected”. That wasn’t even a bad title.

The CD ended. “Molly, do you want to come and watch a video with me?” Molly looked up to find the child’s face inches from her own.
