He Belonged to the Family
âYOU CLEAR away the tea for me, Janet,â said Mother. âDaddy and I have something important to settle.â
Janet pricked up her ears. âWhat is it, Mother? May I listen â or is it secret?â
âOh no â itâs not secret,â said her mother. âBut itâs rather exciting. Daddyâs going to buy a lorry!â
âA lorry!â said Janet. âWhatever for?â
âTo take round the logs, of course,â said Mother. âOld Brownieâs slow, now â and can only pull a small load of logs. Daddy wants to take three times as many out at a time, and so he thinks heâll buy a lorry.â
âBrownie will be pleased,â said Janet. âHe will have a nice rest in the field.â
âOh, I shall sell him,â said Daddy, raising his head from the advertisements he was looking at.
Janet stared in horror. âDADDY! Sell Brownie â our dear old horse! Why â I never remember a time without him. Daddy, you canât sell Brownie!â
âIâve had a very good offer for him already,â said Daddy. âFrom Mr Lucas, down at the farm.â
Janet stared at her father and mother as if she couldnât believe her ears. âYou canât sell old Brownie,â she said again, with tears in her eyes. âMother â heâs one of the family. He really is. I love him. So does Paul.â
âWell, weâre fond of him, too,â said her father. âBut we have to be sensible about things, Janet. I need a lorry â Mr Lucas will buy Brownie. It all fits nicely.â
âIt doesnât, it doesnât,â cried Janet. âYou know Mr Lucas is horrid. Oh, Daddy â I canât believe it. Does Paul know?â
Paul was her brother. He was out shutting up the hens, and having a word with Brownie in his old stable.
âNo â Paul doesnât know yet,â said Mother. Janet put down the cups she was carrying and rushed to the door. âIâm going to tell him,â she said. âHeâll beg and beg you not to sell dear old Brownie.â
The door slammed behind her. She ran out into the cold night. âPaul! Paul! Where are you?â
âHere. With Brownie,â shouted Paul. In half a minute his sister was flying in at the stable door. She caught his arm.
âPaul! Did you know Daddy was buying a lorry â and selling Brownie to Mr Lucas?â
Paul whistled. âNo! He canât do that! Sell our Brownie! Why, heâd be absolutely miserable! He loves us.â
âJust at Christmas-time, too,â said Janet, sniffing her tears away. âCanât you beg Daddy not to do such a dreadful thing?â
Paul rubbed Brownieâs velvety nose, and the horse nuzzled against him, pushing gently. He loved this boy and girl. The were always good to him, always kind. They had often ridden on him on the way to school when their father had taken his loaded cart of logs to deliver round the town. They were his friends.
Daddy wouldnât alter his mind. âNO,â he said. âAnd please donât be silly over this. Iâm not going to turn down a good offer for Brownie. And I do want that lorry.
