CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Kimberly sat up in bed, blinking in the sunlight that streamed into her room. Disoriented, she took a moment to remember where she was. The Cardinal hotel in New Orleans. Her clock read just after eight o’clock.

Her throbbing head protested her continued lack of sleep. But an unsettling mixture of fatigue and confusion worried her. What had happened last night? She’d truly felt as though she traveled to different locations and witnessed the scenes unfold, as real as any of her normal daily encounters. She would suspect mental issues or hallucinations except that Flint had fallen to the floor when they’d returned, still pleading with Bo. If Flint had experienced the same visions she had seen, didn’t that suggest they had witnessed the same thing? Which meant she wasn’t going crazy. And yet she still couldn’t explain what had happened. She’d never encountered anything like it. Connecting with spirits and being able to “see” their memories was one thing. Moving locations was disorienting. At least, that’s how it felt. Sterling insisted they hadn’t left at all. So maybe this was simply another way of experiencing memories.

Her abilities to connect with spirits did not grant her telekinesis or the ability to see into the future. She’d sometimes witnessed the past, but that was simply accessing the memories of the spirits who connected with her. Last night could not have resulted from witnessing someone’s past memory. Could it? Abby looked the same age. Jeremy looked the same age. She’d known, without knowing how, that she was glimpsing upcoming Christmas festivities unfolding before her. Not memories. The future.

She pushed the blankets aside and hung her legs off the side of the bed, cradling her head. Maybe she was losing her mind. She couldn’t see the future. And yet how else could she explain what had happened? When Flint babbled about visions of Christmas and concern about Abby, her crew had looked to her to dispel his ramblings. And instead she’d confirmed every word. They’d all looked at her with doubt in their eyes. She couldn’t blame them. She recognized how crazy she sounded. Sterling, of course, had insisted they hadn’t left the room and had simply stood quietly for a few moments before Flint dropped to his knees.

A few moments? How could that be? She’d felt like they’d been gone an hour or more, shifting from one home to another.

She shook her head. Maybe sheer exhaustion distorted her perception. Her body ached, and her mind screamed for sleep. How did Bram do it? He described switching to a nocturnal schedule as if it were as simple as flipping a switch to turn off a light. Not for her it wasn’t. She’d been at this for years. And still couldn’t fully acclimate. She simply couldn’t sleep all day. Then again, Bram had demonstrated another ability last night that left her dumbfounded. She’d never heard of a psychic who could daze someone as he’d shown he could.

What else did celebrity psychic Kimberly Wantland remain
