Chapter Five

Jayden swirled the club soda in her glass, then finished it off. She pushed away from the bar, trying to decide if she should wait on the cute chambermaid to return or not. Despite saying she’d be back, Jayden didn’t really believe her. Apparently, her friend had the perfect match for her. Oh, well. It’s not like she had illusions of a party dalliance with Cinderella. Although sneaking off to a dark corner somewhere would have been fun.

With a sigh, she walked over to the edge of the make-do dance floor, spotting Courtney and the man in black dancing to Jingle Bell Rock. Courtney had a dreamy look on her face and Jayden dramatically rolled her eyes. So much for her plan to seduce her boss. The man in black seemed to have taken a hold of her. Literally, as he spun her around.

That was a good thing, though. Maybe Courtney wouldn’t need a ride home. Maybe then she could escape early and—

“You bored with the festivities already? Or planning an attack to pillage and plunder the villagers?”

She turned, finding the chambermaid beside her. She nodded with a smile. “Guilty. Bored, not to plunder, that is.” She cleared her throat. “Is it obvious?”

The chambermaid leaned against her shoulder with a sigh. “Me too. I hate parties, really.”

Jayden raised her eyebrows. “I thought I was the only one here who hated parties. Looks like everyone else is having a good time.”

“Maybe it’s the booze.”

“Ah. Yes…booze does help people loosen up, doesn’t it? Sometimes too loose.”

Cinderella tilted her head. “You’re not just the designated driver, are you? You don’t drink?”

Jayden shrugged. “I’m kinda on a health kick. But even if I wasn’t, I’ve realized that booze isn’t required to have a good time.”

“No, it’s not.”

Then she laughed. “Of course, it might help at a party like this. I’m here against my will. I don’t know a soul.”

“Really? Who forced you to come.”

She pointed out to the dance floor. “The idiot in the miniskirt. She’s infatuated with her boss.”

“Who’s her boss?”

“Don’t know. He’s apparently very cute and very dreamy.” She looked again to the dance floor. “His name is Barkley something or other.”

“Oh, so you don’t know him.”

“No. But he’s throwing the party so maybe this big ass house is his.” Realizing how she sounded, she held up her hand. “That came out wrong. It’s a very nice house. Just big.” She raised an eyebrow. “What about you? You work for the company too?”

There was only a slight hesitation. “No.”

She jerked a thumb toward the dance floor. “You know that guy though? The guy in black?”

“Sort of. Why?”

“He insinuated I get to know you.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “He said you get naughty sometimes.”

“Naughty?” The chambermaid grimaced. “Like Ron, he’s trying to set me up, apparently.”

Jayden smiled at her. “Speaking of that, what happened to the princess? You escaped before she kissed you?”

“Ron is a dear friend but he has no clue as to the women I find attractive. And don’t get me wrong, this woman seemed perfectly nice.
