Something smelled amazing.

Claudia couldn't remember the last time she had been this comfortable. Or slept this well, for that matter. She didn't want it to end, but she was going to have to head back in to work to explain to Chucky why the hell they hadn't gotten those lobbyists dinner and drinks.

He would understand. She hoped he would, anyway. She had been shot, and her coworker was dead; maybe that would gain them a reprieve from Chucky’s wrath.

Huh. Steve was dead. She'd been shot. Weird how all that was coming back to her, although she’d genuinely thought she was dreaming for the duration. It was unsettling, but for the moment, Claudia still couldn't bring herself to move.

When she finally did, something ached in her back, forcing her to open her eyes and look at an unfamiliar ceiling. She was in an unfamiliar bed too, the kind that was generally seen in animated movies about kids in the Victorian age who were told to retire before Santa made an appearance.

"What is this?"

Her voice came out in a deep croak that told her she'd been out long enough to need some fluids.

Claudia slowly pushed herself up, letting the covers slide off. She wasn't sure why she half-expected to be naked under them, but she was dressed in what had to be the most comfortable PJs she'd ever had on. They were red plaid, of course, and they reeked of Kris' sense of fashion—or lack thereof.

Still, they were comfortable.

She pulled her shirt up and saw that fresh bandages had been applied to her wounds. They gave her more of a throbbing pain instead of the stabbing bolts it had been before.

Vague memories were starting to surface. She remembered being shot and fighting her way through. Kris had been there, and he’d helped her get home. Then things went fuzzy. Vague memories were all she had in her mind. She had a feeling the rest would come back, but for the moment, she needed to find something to eat and drink.

Her stomach was growling, and it was time to address that.

The covers came off, and she started to climb out of bed.

"Oh, fuck, shit, motherfucking bitch! Ow!"

Moving too quickly had tugged the stitching around her stomach, so Claudia slowed down, inching toward the side of the bed and gingerly sitting up, then stepping onto the warm wooden floor. Everything about the room was so damn homey. It wasn't her home, though, which made her feel like she had ended up in a bed and breakfast she had no memory of checking into.

Good smells got her attention, and Claudia realized there was something set up on the bedside table.

"Cookies and hot cocoa?" Her eyes narrowed. "That has to be Kris. What is he, twelve? Does he think I'm twelve?"

They were not in line with her diet, not nutritious and probably a hazard since she had a gaping hole in her stomach, but the smells were too enticing to turn her back on. The cookies
