Sully hung up one phone, only to make another call to Logan Doyle. At this rate, he’d have an entire head of gray hair by tomorrow morning. Jeanette Morel, now known as Jennie Monet, had lived out in Jackson, Wyoming for the last ten years, without a hint of a problem. Sully had put his best man in the role as Jennie’s handler, but now Logan had yet to answer any of his calls. Sully reasoned that the handler would have a good explanation for ignoring his calls.

Except Cara had just had surgery after being stabbed by one of Morel’s men. Not to mention the fact that if her attacker knew where her sister was living, he wouldn’t have needed Cara to begin with. As far as Sully was concerned, Jennie was still in expert hands.

And so was Cara.

The doctor had assured Sully that Cara was stable now. Her surgery had been smooth, and she was resting.

Sully chuckled at the term the doctor used. Stable was not a word Sully would link with Cara Haines. The word stable reminded him of something uneventful, predictable, maybe even boring.

No, Cara had never been boring and never would be. But that didn’t mean her life had always been secure. Sully knew all the strife that Cara had had to grow up with, forcing her into a role as guardian for her little sister. An absent mother and a drunken father had led Cara through a life of hard knocks and an unhealthy need for control over every aspect of her being. But never one to let her past define her future, Cara became the best cop Sully had ever met. She was by the book, never wavering from doing what was right. Even saying goodbye to her sister forever to keep her safe.

That ultimate act from the big sister put Sully in awe of Cara. He just never thought she would leave him because of it.

Sully thought back to when he had first partnered with Cara, long before she oversaw the Mountain Country K-9 Unit, which he still partnered with. Ten years ago, Cara had been a supervisor with the Wyoming FBI, quickly rising high in the ranks because of her diligence and expertise in the department. When DC offered her the position as the big boss at FBI headquarters, she’d shrugged it off and kissed him, assuring him she wasn’t going anywhere. Then Luis Morel entered their lives and destroyed everything.

But then, Morel didn’t break them up. Cara did that all on her own.

As a US Marshal supervisor, Sully would always know Jennie’s location and identity in witness protection, and he could never tell Cara. Just as Cara was by the book, so was he. She’d said there couldn’t be two big bosses in the relationship. So DC became her next rank, and he was relegated to part of her past.

Sully’s cell phone rang on his desk. He glanced quickly, but it wasn’t Logan. Instead, the number alerted Sully to Chase Rawlston, the MCK9 task force leader.
