EPILOGUE

Jess woke up late the next morning to a toasty warm room, an empty bed, and the sound of voices coming from the floor below. Yawning, she got out of bed, tucked her feet into her slippers, and shuffled out into the hall. Teresa, who had slept in the guest room with her mom, was just exiting her own room, looking just as groggy as Jess felt.

“Power’s back on?”

“Looks like it,” Jess said.

They went downstairs together. The smell of breakfast greeted them, and Jess felt her stomach rumble. The happiness she felt when she walked into the kitchen and saw her mom bustling around in front of the stove and her dad pouring everyone coffee at the table had nothing to do with the promise of a good meal, though. She just stood there for a moment, looking at her family — plus Adam, who was staring at the huge pile of pancakes her mother had just put in front of him in shock— all together, until Teresa nudged her gently and she realized she was in the way.

She stepped to the side, letting her cousin through while Scott swooped in to kiss her. She smiled up at him. “Good morning. You should have woken me when you got up.”

“I wanted to help your dad shovel,” he said with a shrug. “I thought you could use the sleep.”

That was probably true. She, Scott, and Adam had been up nearly until dawn dealing with the aftermath of what had happened at Mr. Schurman’s house. Apparently, murder was enough to get the police to send a unit their way. Mrs. Young would be spending Christmas behind bars. It wasn’t the ideal way for anyone to spend the holiday, but considering that she had ensured Mr. Schurman wouldn’t see Christmas at all, Jess didn’t feel bad for her.

Despite having been up just as late as she and Scott had been, Jess’ parents looked chipper. She kept reliving the moment of hearing her mom’s voice, and the rush of relief it had given her. Stuck in the huge traffic backup caused by the pileup on the freeway without their phones, they had run their car out of gas to keep warm and had then had to ask the police who were working to clear the backup to call roadside assistance. The tow truck driver who had brought them gasoline had been kind enough to let Jess’ mom borrow his phone, which was what she had called Jess on.

The whole story hadn’t come out until her parents made their way back home — or rather, back to Mr. Schurman’s house, where they told the police everything. They had been concerned when their neighbor didn’t answer his phone after repeated attempts to get ahold of him, and so they had driven over to check on him, only to find his body cooling on the floor and his housekeeper rifling through his belongings.

Mrs. Young had waved the gun at them and they had fled, heading for the police station on the other side of town.
