Chapter Eleven

Nicole sat cross-legged atop Uncle Joe’s old desk in the Keating Inn office with a large clipboard splayed across her thighs. Casey watched as she scribed out a list of “Christmas Specials” for the Acadia Eatery, including difficult and time-consuming recipes like soufflé, none of which she could be persuaded not to try.

“This is my first Christmas as head chef. I have to push my limits. I have to experiment,” she’d told Heather and Casey.

Heather painted her nails in the corner, similarly cross-legged in a big cozy reading chair, which was positioned where a beam of light streamed in from a strangely beautiful, sunny winter day. Her phone sat beside her and offered a constant stream of conversation from Kristine and Bella, who spoke all at once to describe a recent Brooklyn-based party they’d attended, where they’d met a filmmaker woman who wanted to make Heather’s books into movies.

It was a rather slow afternoon at the Keating Inn. Luke operated the lunch rush in the Eatery while the three Harvey Sisters sat comfortably in the office. Abby sat at the front desk and offered a bright smile of greeting to passers-by. It was December 3rd and the “Official Start of Christmas,” in many respects, across Bar Harbor. The Keating Inn itself was busted to the gills with Christmas cheer, with a Christmas tree in nearly every room and tinsel sparkling in every corner. Casey had a hunch they’d be pulling tinsel out of every crevice of the place until July.

“I just don’t know if the book would translate well to film,” Heather articulated to her daughters thoughtfully as she waved a hand to dry her nails. “It’s not that I’m not interested in a meeting. I just don’t know...”

Kristine laughed wryly. “Mom. This is the game. You have to push yourself into that ring.”

“Come on, Kris. If she doesn’t want to, she doesn’t want to,” Bella returned.

“I’ll take the meeting...” Heather offered again. “I just don’t want a hack-it job when it comes to something so close to my heart.”

Casey nabbed a Christmas-themed Reese’s cup from a little bowl they’d set up for themselves in the office and unwrapped it distractedly. Heather told her girls she would call them later and then splayed her hands over her forehead. Nicole muttered inwardly about a selection of ingredients she would have to purchase for the upcoming Christmas menu.

“That sounds exciting,” Casey tried, surprising herself at her ability to have any sort of conversation that didn’t revolve around the very sincere wreckage of her heart and family.

Heather’s nails caught the light as she whipped her hands back to her thighs. “Casey. I can’t keep this in any longer.”

Casey arched an eyebrow. “What’s wrong?” Nothing good ever came from words like this.

Nicole lifted her head from her intense ingredient concentration.

“Luke and I went out for a walk the other night by the docks,” Heather breathed. “Usually, it’s pretty empty down there and just so wistful, you know. But as we got closer to the docks, we saw a man on the phone alone.
