The next day, Conrad’s cell phone rang. He’d hoped it was Audrey, whom he could never get enough of.

Instead her name didn’t show up on the caller ID.

“Is this Ulysses Pearson?”

Conrad reacted to the name. “Yes. Who is this?”

“Ben McCray. My son, Willis, gave me your number.”

Conrad perked up, glad to hear from the retired firefighter. “Mr. McCray, how are you?”

“I’m doing just fine. So you’re Grant Pearson’s boy?”

“Yeah.”

“Your daddy and I were good friends back in the old days.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“I’d love to be able to get together with you and talk about him.”

“I’d like that, too,” Conrad said keenly.

“If you want to drop by my house this evening, say around six, I can free up my own schedule. I think Willis said that he didn’t know how much longer you’d be in town.”

It was something Conrad was uncertain of himself, feeling that it depended to a large extent on how things went with Audrey. What he did know was that having a face-to-face with someone who knew his father was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

“Six sounds good,” he replied.

“I’ll see you then.”

Conrad got directions and then called Jayne to check in on his business.
