I had finished Rubyâs coat and hat and called her to let her know it was ready. Sheâd be picking it up this afternoon. I put the coat and hat on the mannequin to let Max try it on like Iâd promised her.
Moving the mannequin in front of the three-way mirror, I asked Max if she was nearby.
She appeared by my side. âIâm here. I was simply resting up for our exciting evening.â
I was dreading our so-called exciting evening, but I didnât say so. âThis wonât take but a moment. I thought youâd want to see yourself in Rubyâs coat and hat before she comes to get it.â
âYou know I do!â She superimposed herself onto the mannequin and gasped. âIsnât this incredible?â
âYou look gorgeous,â I said.
âWho are you talking to?â
I turned, surprised to see Sienna. âI didnât hear you come in.â
âI did it quiet, like a detective would. Who are you talking to?â
âTheâ¦umâ¦the coat. Iâm really happy with the way it turned out.â
âIt is very pretty,â Sienna said, âbut do you always talk to your clothes?â
I shrugged. âSometimes, I do.â
She gave me a nod that made me think if the detective business didnât work out, she might want to consider being a therapist. âI didnât get to talk with you when I came by earlier this morning because I got busy with Joey and Biscuit.â
âWell, itâs always nice to make new friends, donât you think?â
âYes, it is. And Joey and I exchanged phone numbers, so we can be friends from now on even though we go to different schools,â she said.
âThatâs great.â
âYeah. Anyway, I wanted to follow up with you and see if thereâs anything else you need me to do.â
âNo,â I said. âIâm delighted with the thorough job you did, and Iâll certainly hire you again if and when the need arises.â
âGreat. Thanks.â She sat on one of the sewing machine chairs and began spinning around. âSo, Amanda, whatâs your favorite color?â
âI canât say I have a favorite,â I said. âI like them allâseparately and in various combinationsââ
âWhen youâre not here working, what do you enjoy doing?â she asked.
It dawned on me that she was working on her report for the person who drew my name for the Secret Santa gifts. Smiling slightly, I walked away from the mirror, leaving Max to admire herself a little longer, and took a seat beside Sienna. Answering the diminutive detectiveâs questions would be a good distraction from the nail-biting evening that lay before Grandpa Dave and me.
