Chapter Seventeen

They walked across fresh snow, nice and powdery, not slick at all, and went to the hotel. Before they got there, they saw two deer quietly eating berries next to the stairs. They jumped with fine grace, silently running around the building.

They climbed the stairs and went through the lobby towards the lounge. As they did so, they passed the moose head trophy with the Christmas lights on its antlers. Horton nodded to it.

That was odd, thought Ted, then he saw it nod back to Horton and wink at him. Ted followed Horton into the lounge. He was happy to see Crystal running drinks to a table.

They sat down, and Crystal waved at them. Horton waved back. He waited for her to return, two coffees already in her hands. She got to the table, and she saw the looks on their faces. At another table nearby were four loggers with safety vests and hard hats.

“What is it, sugar?” said Crystal.

“We think they are close,” said Horton.

Her expression changed. The smile slipped from her face. “And if you guys hadn't taken my boyfriend to the Aquarium last night...”

“We’re here to help.”

“I see you've got another animal friend here,” she said, regaining some smile and scratching Bob’s neck.

“Bob!” said Bob.

“What?” said Ted, “Hello Bob.”

“Bob! Men!” They all turned around.

“Like it or not, you're up to your neck now, boys,” said Crystal.

The loggers stood up, scraping their chairs back as they did so. Two of them lifted axes, and the other two lifted long hammers. They pulled down their hard hats, making sure they were secure.

Crystal turned her back on her boys and wolfed out, transforming instantly. Her hair was out, and her mouth was snarling and filled with sharp teeth. Her claws were out, and her clothes were gone.

Another werewolf transformed behind the bar.

A third, running cups and plates to the dishwasher transformed. The lady from the front desk ran in. Ted could only assume it was her because he didn't see her change.

Crystal got between the loggers and Ted and Horton and howled. Soon, all the werewolves were howling.

Ted pulled out one of his pistol-sized crossbows and set it. He thought he should ask Margie later for something better for close combat, like a magic turtle shell he could hide in. Then he couldn't see. Bob left his shoulder and flew to the light on the rafter above them. Ted fell into a chair while Horton fought the werewolves and loggers. He pulled the trigger; the bow went twang, and the bolt flew in the middle of everyone. Bob was screeching. It fell and hit a logger who had just raised his hammer to strike Crystal. He wasn't entirely sure it was her anymore. Either way, the bolt hit, and he went down. When he did, his body melted, leaving his clothing behind. He transformed into a shadow and slid out of there.

“Oh wow! I'm seeing through his eyes.”

Ted could see the entire room.

Crystal took one down, a great bite splintering one into his shadow self.
