In Chapter 12, the elder John then sees a vision of a great red dragon, who sweeps a third of the stars out of heaven (harkening back to the descriptions of fallen angels in the Book of the Watchers and Jubilees). This picture is not of a future event but summarizes the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus from the standpoint of a cosmic battle. This cosmic battle breaks out between the archangel Michael and his angels against the dragon and his angels. The seer then identifies the dragon for the reader as follows: “The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” (Rev. 12:9). After Jesus has ascended to the throne and Satan has been defeated, he is then left to afflict the Christians: “Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus.” (Rev. 12:17)
