Chapter Seven

“He has the King’s guard.”

They stopped walking, stopped breathing. The silence in the cavern was a beast of its own.

“He has…what?” Elide growled in the darkness.

“That Alpha…the one who threatened you,” the words slipped from my lips. “Yellow against black…a sword driven through the middle.”

There was a groan and a low snarl. “Fuck,” from Manon as the towering male turned away.

“When you say ‘he has him’, what exactly do you mean exactly?” Elide cocked a brow and stepped closer.

Energy coursed through me as the Alpha touched my hand. Elide reached for me, and yet the creature shivered and stepped closer to the guard.

Panic swirled around us like the beginning of a sandstorm. Through the beast’s eyes, I saw the King’s man lift his head and stare at the creature. “What the fuck are you?”

“It’s standing in front of him. It smells the rotting of his soul, smells the cruel, barbaric hunger that drives him. It wants to end that hunger…it wants to end him.”

Bad, the beast’s thoughts slipped through my mind. Bad man. I sucked in a breath, the connection to the creature so strong now, pulsing through me. “Bad…bad man,” I whispered.

“Then we have to hurry,” Manon looked at me.

“Or we don’t, let the beast kill him,” Rowan murmured.

There was a grimace on Elide’s face, then a shuddered breath. “No, that could be disastrous for us.” He looked at me when he said it, as though all the problems that might come were a direct result of me.

I never wanted to be here. All I wanted was my sister home safe. That’s all. “Let me go,” I whispered. “I caused this. I’ll fix this. Just let me and my sister leave.”

Even as I said the words, an ache speared through my chest. A snarl rumbled in the darkness. I didn’t know which one made the sound.

“We get that thing back inside you and then we’ll talk,” Elide muttered, turning away.

Anger rolled off him in waves. Cold anger…savage anger. I swallowed the sting and followed the others as they headed for a way out of this endless dark. We walked for what felt like hours, making our way through the network of tunnels in silence.

My steps became automatic and I was lulled by the thud as my feet hit the ground. I wasn’t there, not really. I was high above, in the belly of the beast, watching through the creature’s eyes as Ohan, the King’s guard, rose from the ground and looked toward his sword.

Bad…the beast warned inside me, and the word slipped from my lips. “Bad. Bad man.”

The others hurried, climbing a steep incline. Rocks clattered, falling to the side as Rowan hung back, lifting his hand to help me. I pulled away from the beast settling into my own body and grabbed his hand.

Elide’s anger still hung heavy in the air. I breathed in the bitter stench and met Rowan’s gaze. “He’s angry with me.”

“Hurt, more like it.”

I turned my head to find Elide and Manon slipping through a narrow opening.
