Hades

Hades had become aware of the powerful presence nearby as soon as they landed, and he felt the rush of magic as Daphne sensed for the others. He studied her, waiting for her reaction when her eyes snapped opened and she looked to the edge of the forest.

Following her line of sight, he watched in horror as the one person he did not want to see stepped out of the trees.

Her auburn hair was loose and flowing behind her, conveniently kept out of her face with a band, so the strands wouldn’t impede her ability to take aim. From Artemis’ focus, Hades could see that her target was not him; it was Daphne.

He looked at the Fate he had so quickly fallen for, and he could see that she knew it was true as well. The flicker of dread that flashed across her face was quickly replaced with determination.

Her jaw was set, her face anticipatory because she knew that there was no outrunning Artemis.

Hades looked back to where the goddess of the hunt was standing, just in time to watch her notched arrow fly through the air. He leaped forward, releasing a burst of magic to disintegrate the weapon.

The metal arrowhead fell at Daphne’s feet, leaving her completely unharmed. A rush of relief engulfed him.

“Artemis!”

Hades tried to rein in the rage in his voice as he called out to his niece, but she did not slow. She continued stalking at the two of them, Hades now blocking Daphne with his body.

“You have been sent falsely. The accusations that your father has heard were rumors. We did not do what my brother believes.”

“You’re on Earth, Uncle.”

She cocked an eyebrow and continued to slink closer, though he noted a sparkle of curiosity as Artemis measured Daphne up. Was she sensing Daphne’s powers, or had she assessed from Hades’ defense of the mortal that Daphne was important to him?

There wasn’t much distance between the three of them now, and Hades was a little concerned about how he would be able to protect Daphne. He was good at close combat, but Artemis was skilled at long-range. That was hard to stop and difficult to predict, making it a danger to have Daphne anywhere near this fight.

“Yes, I crossed through the gate, but I am not trying to destroy it. I was just bored. Don’t you get bored up there in Olympus, Artemis?”

Artemis’ thin lips split into a smile that could almost be a snarl.

“I guess not,” he muttered to himself, pushing Daphne back a few paces. He had to get through to his niece. “Zeus is wrong—"

“I don’t care,” she growled, launching an arrow in their direction to shut him up.

Hades ducked down to block Daphne’s body completely as he created a wall of magic that dissolved another arrow.

“Hades, I can help,” Daphne protested behind him, but he shook his head.

He kept her behind his body, safe away from the arrows flying in their direction. He could handle Artemis himself.

It occurred to Hades then that he could’ve been hurt if that arrow had hit him.
