Shortly before two a.m., I approach Aunt Sherry to say goodnight. The birthday girl looks regal in her glittering black outfit and not a day over fifty. My aunt has always been one of the most beautiful women I know, with perfectly silver hair styled in waves around her collar and the bright green eyes she shares with my mother, who I inherited my own from.

Aunt Sherry folds me into her arms. “Nix said you helped him plan all of this. Thank you, sweet girl. This was a night to remember.”

I hug her back tightly. “I’m sorry Mom couldn’t make it.”

“Flying with a broken leg is unnecessary,” Aunt Sherry says. “Don’t worry, she’ll be making it up to me with a trip to Napa Valley this fall. Everything’s already booked, come hell or high water.”

I chuckle. “Everyone in that town better get ready for you two.”

“You’re more than welcome to join us, but it’s a girls-only trip.” Aunt Sherry glances over my shoulder, smirking. “And I can’t imagine you’d want to leave that incredible hunk behind.”

I groan. “Hunk?”

“Well, he is, isn’t he?” She brushes my hair over one shoulder. “Listen, I know about what’s been going on with Randy. And I’m sick to hear it. But you look happy, sweetie. You’re goddamn glowing, which is something you never did with that abusive bastard.”

“Aunt Sherry…”

She holds up a hand. “We won’t get into it here and now. But now that you live closer to me, we’re going to have a nice dinner together at my house and a long talk about everything. At the end of the day, I want you to be happy. And you look very happy with this new man. This last month must have been pure bliss.”

“More like...this last twenty-four hours,” I confess. “I just met him last night. In fact...Tonya bought him.”

Aunt Sherry blinks. “I beg your pardon? He’s an escort?”

“No!” I exclaim, then laugh. “Sorry. No. He’s a cop, actually, and he did a charity dating auction. Tonya bid three hundred dollars for me to have a date with him.”

“And you brought him here? And he hasn’t gone screaming to the mountains yet?” Aunt Sherry sucks her lip. “I’d say he’s a keeper for sure.”

“I feel terrible about lying.” I shake my head. “I guess I wanted him to be a distraction from the Randy stuff. I just don’t want to answer questions about that.”

“So you brought a fake boyfriend.” Aunt Sherry lifts a shoulder. “Maybe you don’t have the time in, but it’s clear he makes you happy. I like that a lot. Run with it, sweetie. Let yourself live and be happy. Maybe he’s the one.” She places her hands on my cheeks and kisses my forehead. “The only way to find out is to move forward.”

“Thanks, Aunt Sherry,” I say, clasping her hands.

She smiles and winks at Hunter over my shoulder. “The party’s over, but the night’s still young. You two should go and...get to know each other better.”

“Aunt Sherry!”

“I might be sixty, but I’m not oblivious, sweetie.
