Developing Your Own Style
There are few universal “right ways” to do mediumship. These include being honest, compassionate, and ethical, and striving to be of service to those on both sides of the veil. The ability to proficiently perform and demonstrate mediumship is also important. Aside from those parameters, there remains substantial flexibility in style and presentation.
Discover what types of mediumship you enjoy and which methods suit you. Find your natural rhythm and style; don’t merely imitate your teachers. If you admire certain mediums, choose what aspects you like about them to emulate. Your mediumship won’t be the same as anyone else’s. Don’t let a teacher tell you you’re wrong or need to do it their way.
Some mediums use tarot cards, candles, runes, crystals, or other oracles to aid their connection to Spirit, and many offer psychic readings, combined with or separate from mediumship. Others want physical contact with their sitter or the sitter’s personal object, like a piece of jewelry or a key. There are mediums who like to work with photos of the deceased or objects that used to be theirs, and ones that ask the sitter to say the name of their loved one out loud. Some mediums work with angels, give spirit guide readings, or focus on communicating with animals. There’s no best way to communicate with Spirit; you need to be your best, and only you can decide what that looks like.
I’m somewhat of a purist regarding spirit communication, which doesn’t make me better than anyone who uses accessories or combines mediumship with other endeavors. It might just mean I’m rigid. I’ve used tarot cards casually for decades and enjoy pulling a card now and then, but I’ve never used them in a reading. I don’t usually find viewing photos helpful and don’t feel a need to touch people or objects. I don’t want to hear the names of sitters’ loved ones; I’d rather get names from Spirit. I don’t work with angels, give spirit guide or psychic readings, or communicate with animals, although I like connecting with deceased pets when they turn up.
I do find many of these practices to be terrific learning tools. I use them with my students, enjoy them in circles, and you’ll find them in the exercises in this book. I just choose not to use them when working as a professional medium. I want my students to experience what works well and feels right for them, not to act the way I do. If you can, study with mediums who have varying styles. Discover what resonates with your soul and follow your unique path.
