Gustave Moreau

Gustave Moreau, painter of the beautiful picture ‘Dead Poetess Carried by a Centaur’,111 had Chiron in Aries in a stellium with Pluto, Moon, Sun and Venus, the latter two being quincunx Mars in Scorpio. Chiron is sesquiquadrate Jupiter, sextile Saturn and square Neptune. He spent his entire life in Paris, never displaying the outer heroics one might associate with such a concentration of Aries energy; he never married, and lived in the family home with his parents. After they died he converted the building into a gallery and museum for his work, opened in 1903. His relationship with the imaginal realms of myth and legend was profoundly soulful, and his portrayals of the archetypal themes of human life are expressed with delicacy and poignancy. He was also the teacher and mentor, in true Chiron fashion, of many famous French artists of the Impressionist school. Portrayals of the vulnerable and tragic feminine abound in his work, congruent with Chiron conjunct Venus. The painting mentioned above, and also a depiction of Orpheus at the tomb of Eurydice, were painted during the year after his life long companion Alexandrine died. They had met in 1859, just as Chiron was approaching his MC by transit, and indeed she was his muse and inspiratrice. Although they never married, she lived in an apartment near his home. When she died transiting Chiron was in Cancer, opposite his Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn, and square his Venus-Chiron conjunction. Moreau died in 1898, of stomach cancer, when the transiting South Node and also his Progressed Venus were in the same degree area where Chiron had been when Alexandrine died – opposite his Uranus, and squaring his Venus-Chiron conjunction. The luminosity of his work has touched millions of people, and enabled them to experience a personal relationship with the archetypal characters in the world of mythology. True to Chiron in Aries, his work stands in a class of its own.

Sometimes, with Chiron-Venus, relationships themselves become archetypal, and cross the boundaries of race, nation and religion. See the horoscope of Dr. Ian Player in Part IV for an example of a Chiron-Venus relationship whose ripples spread into a global context. Many influential people, men and women alike, have extra-marital relationships alongside their official partners, sometimes with their knowledge. The ‘hidden history of the world’ could well be the one written to include all the invisible women who have influenced the men who have shaped the world. The power of Eros to energize and transform us through passion is universal, and with Chiron-Venus aspects, we are very open to this energy, in whatever form it is expressed.
