Once she had swallowed the meat and taken several swigs of the wine, Ma Moosejaw told everyone what had happened. “Chief Thunderstruck could be anywhere,” she gulped. “He could be—”

Fangtrude felt her nose twitch. “What was he wearing?” she asked.

“My white bearskin jacket,” replied Ma Moosejaw. She felt a huge tear dribble down her cheek. “He was so cold that I made him put it on.”

“Humph,” said Fangtrude, thoughtfully. “So you’re telling me he was wearing a jacket made out of the same fur as the big white bear?”

Ma Moosejaw nodded.

“Like you were when you first met it?”

Ma Moosejaw nodded again.

Fangtrude tipped her head to one side and rolled her red eyes. “That’s why the bear was so angry,” she said. “For all you know, the jacket might have been made out of its mother.”

Ma Moosejaw buried her head in her hands. “Oh no,” she groaned. She reached out and put her great hand on Fangtrude’s hairy knee. “Dear Fangtrude, what are we doing to do?”
