CHAPTER 14

When Conrad returned to the office, he saw the list Doug Keegan had dropped off. Doug had listed the homeowners in Miriam’s subdivision as well as those he knew in the Redding Realty subdivision next door. To talk to the workers, he would have to go door to door on Monday. It would be a long day.

After starting his coffeemaker, Conrad looked through the reports that Fred Rucker had left on his desk. There was a noise complaint filed by Jacob Hart against Joe Decker on two different occasions.

There was also a theft allegation made against Hart & Grace Tax Service, more specifically against Tim Grace. The reporting party had been Wyatt Tanner, a young man that worked part-time for Bryan Stotlar on the weekends as a landscaper and had his own lawn care business that he ran during the week. He had filed a report last year with Officer Tabor alleging Tim Grace stole his identity and his tax refund.

Conrad filled his coffee cup and flipped through more reports. There was another report from four years earlier where Paul Henson reported Tim Grace had altered his tax return after he had signed it. He said Tim had added additional forms to claim rebates and credits that were false which inflated Paul’s refund, then Tim kept the extra money.

How did he stay in business after these kinds of allegations? And why would Jacob continue to work with him unless he was involved?

Conrad dialed the telephone number listed on Wyatt Tanner’s police report and hoped it was still good.

“Hello.”

“Wyatt? Wyatt Tanner?”

“Yep, that’s me.” Wyatt was a wiry young man who had a cheerful demeanor on the occasions that Conrad had talked with him. He had a young wife and was always eager to work. Conrad had gone fishing with him and his grandfather many times when he had first moved to town and George “Bing” Bingham, Cora Mae’s husband, had been showing him around. Wyatt had been raised by his grandparents and they lived out on Eagle Bay Road near the lake.

“Hi, Wyatt. It’s Chief Harris. I hope I’m not catching you at a bad time.”

“No, not a bit, Chief. What can I do for you?”

“I was just looking over this old report you filed last year. You had some trouble with your income tax?”

“Oh, yeah. Tim Grace is a crook. I reported him to the IRS, too, like Eugene Tabor told me to.”

“You did? What did they tell you?”

“They showed me how to file an amended return and said they’d take care of it. I guess Grace had to pay the money back. I don’t know.”

“Hmm, how did you find out about this?”

“Cindy and I were over in Paxton trying to buy a trailer and the financing guy had to order a copy of my last tax return because I couldn’t find my copy at first. You know how they do all that credit check stuff. Anyway, once we got back home, I found it, so I took it with me when we went back over there.
