This move threatens to wreck White's castled position because it puts a double attack on the e5 pawn which is supporting the d6 knight. When Black’s knight moves it will expose an attack on the d6 knight by the queen. The knight on f3 would be exchanged and White’s g pawn would end up on f3. It forces White to make some exchanges....
