Chapter Four

The pre-dawn morning was perfect for jogging. Knight slipped out of the studio, where he’d spent the night working, and headed out onto the street. The sound of his feet slapping on the pavement kept him company, except on the parts where the snow was beginning to gather. The first hard snowfall of the season was supposed to hit later in the morning, but Knight was beginning to think it was coming sooner.

Three kilometers into his run, he knew the storm was early. He turned toward home, but only made it to Zva’ before he had to stop. He slipped inside, glad they were already open, and his cell began to ring.

“Y…y-yeah?” Fuck, he was cold.

“K, where the fuck are you?” Bish sounded angry, which probably meant he was worried.

“At the c-c-coffee shop.”

“Why are you stuttering? Are you okay? Have you seen the blizzard out there?”

“I’m just c-c-cold. It wasn’t”—he beamed at Rick when a coffee was pushed into his hands—“snowing when I left.”

“What are you wearing?”

Somehow that didn’t sound as sexy as it usually did.

“Running clothes.” A sweatshirt, shorts, and shoes. Bish was going to have a fit.

The growl on the phone said that was exactly what Bish was in the process of having. “Stay there.” The phone went dead.

“Ah, fuck.”

He sat, sipping his coffee, letting the heat thaw him.

It was nearly fifteen minutes before Bish came in the door, wrapped up like a mummy and carrying Knight’s winter coat and boots.

“Bish.” He went for a smile.

“You are going to catch your death out running in this weather wearing that.”

His boots were dropped onto the ground in front of him, a hat, scarf and mitts pulled out of one of the sleeves of the coat Bish was carrying.

“I’ll look silly in boots and shorts.”

“So what do you suggest, K? Walking home like that?”

“I was going to run.” He grabbed his coat.

“You did run—you’re all sweaty. You’re going to make yourself sick.” Bish took a breath, helped him into the coat. “Sorry. I freaked out a bit when I saw the blizzard outside and you were nowhere to be found.”

“It was early.” He was shaky now, and tired. He’d worked all night. He wanted to go home.

Bish put his hat on, wrapped the scarf around his neck and got his hands into the mittens. “We’re walking. The snow was too thick to drive.” Bish’s arm wrapped around him.

“Okay.” He looked at Bish. “Okay. It’s early for you to be awake.”

Bish shrugged. “I had a feeling.”

“Hey, guys.” Rick came up, a pair of sweatpants in hand. “For the walk home, eh?”

“Thank you, Rick. I’d assumed he was wearing his running pants.”

“Knight? That would be logical.” He got a wink.

Bish snickered, arm tightening around him. “Come on, let’s get these things on so we can get you home and warmed up properly.”

“Please.” He was suddenly exhausted, raw and shattered.

Bish got him dressed, got them moving, sheltering him from the storm when they went out. The walk to the house seemed endless and short, all at once.
