Chapter Nine
Susie and her driver were just getting out of the SUV when they arrived. The driver went to the back, pulled out several suitcases, and headed for the door.
Susieâs hair had reverted to its natural red color. Though not heavy to begin with, she was leaner than when heâd last seen her and her arms were well-toned, presumably from the kickboxing classes of which Fred spoke. She saw Jerry and smiled a warm smile. âYouâre a sight for sore eyes.â
Fred moved up beside them. âHow was the flight?â
Susie laughed a hearty laugh. âYouâre kidding, right?â
Fred glanced at Jerry. âI didnât think I was.â
She laughed once more. âDude, I flew here in a Learjet. How do you think it was? Then I get here and find Iâm staying in a mansion. Pretty freaking incredible, thatâs how. Whatâs with the dog? It looks like heâs found a dead body. Maybe we should check. Iâll show you how to do an autopsy.â
Jerry turned to see Gunter sniffing at the same spot heâd keyed on earlier. An underground communications system the likes of which youâve never seen. Knowing Fred wouldnât be happy if he divulged that information, Jerry made something up. âProbably smelling the deer that was in the yard earlier.â
Fred looked to where they were staring and sighed. âSomeday.â
âWhatâs with him?â Susie asked when Fred started toward the house.
Jerry lowered his voice. âHe still hasnât seen him yet.â
âThe dog?â
âYep.â
âBummer.â
Jerry motioned her toward the house. âDid they tell you why youâre here?â
âSure. They said I deserved a holiday at the beach.â
Jerry stopped in his tracks.
Susie laughed until she snorted. âGeez, Jerry, lighten up. I was kidding. You canât blame me for wanting to have a bit of fun. I jumped for joy when Fred asked if I was interested in helping catch that freak. Iâd do just about anything to get out of house arrest.â
âThey donât allow you out of the house?â
âSure they do, but not without my mommy. I mean, the ladyâs nice and all, but itâs kind of a drag when people think youâre bringing your mom everywhere.â
âHow old is the woman?â
âI donât know. Maybe a little older than you.â
Jerry raised an eyebrow.
Susie laughed once more. âSeriously, dude. Lighten up. When was the last time you laughed?â
âI laugh all the time.â
âNo, I mean really laugh.â She pointed to his stomach. âCome on, give me a chuckle, Jerry. Think Santa Claus. Let it start in your belly and work its way up.â
âI donât chuckle.â
âSee, thatâs your problem. You need to unwind. When was the last time you were on a date?â
Jerry narrowed his eyes. âHave you been talking to my grandmother?â
She smiled. âNo, just Savannah. She said youâre hung up on some Holly chick, and since I was coming to Virginia that maybe I could take your mind off of her.â
âGreat.â
âGreat, what? You want to go out?â
âNo. Great, Savannah has been hanging out with Max and April all day.â
âWhat do Max and April have to do with anything?â
Before Jerry could answer, an SUV pulled into the driveway.
