Chapter Nine

Susie and her driver were just getting out of the SUV when they arrived. The driver went to the back, pulled out several suitcases, and headed for the door.

Susie’s hair had reverted to its natural red color. Though not heavy to begin with, she was leaner than when he’d last seen her and her arms were well-toned, presumably from the kickboxing classes of which Fred spoke. She saw Jerry and smiled a warm smile. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.”

Fred moved up beside them. “How was the flight?”

Susie laughed a hearty laugh. “You’re kidding, right?”

Fred glanced at Jerry. “I didn’t think I was.”

She laughed once more. “Dude, I flew here in a Learjet. How do you think it was? Then I get here and find I’m staying in a mansion. Pretty freaking incredible, that’s how. What’s with the dog? It looks like he’s found a dead body. Maybe we should check. I’ll show you how to do an autopsy.”

Jerry turned to see Gunter sniffing at the same spot he’d keyed on earlier. An underground communications system the likes of which you’ve never seen. Knowing Fred wouldn’t be happy if he divulged that information, Jerry made something up. “Probably smelling the deer that was in the yard earlier.”

Fred looked to where they were staring and sighed. “Someday.”

“What’s with him?” Susie asked when Fred started toward the house.

Jerry lowered his voice. “He still hasn’t seen him yet.”

“The dog?”

“Yep.”

“Bummer.”

Jerry motioned her toward the house. “Did they tell you why you’re here?”

“Sure. They said I deserved a holiday at the beach.”

Jerry stopped in his tracks.

Susie laughed until she snorted. “Geez, Jerry, lighten up. I was kidding. You can’t blame me for wanting to have a bit of fun. I jumped for joy when Fred asked if I was interested in helping catch that freak. I’d do just about anything to get out of house arrest.”

“They don’t allow you out of the house?”

“Sure they do, but not without my mommy. I mean, the lady’s nice and all, but it’s kind of a drag when people think you’re bringing your mom everywhere.”

“How old is the woman?”

“I don’t know. Maybe a little older than you.”

Jerry raised an eyebrow.

Susie laughed once more. “Seriously, dude. Lighten up. When was the last time you laughed?”

“I laugh all the time.”

“No, I mean really laugh.” She pointed to his stomach. “Come on, give me a chuckle, Jerry. Think Santa Claus. Let it start in your belly and work its way up.”

“I don’t chuckle.”

“See, that’s your problem. You need to unwind. When was the last time you were on a date?”

Jerry narrowed his eyes. “Have you been talking to my grandmother?”

She smiled. “No, just Savannah. She said you’re hung up on some Holly chick, and since I was coming to Virginia that maybe I could take your mind off of her.”

“Great.”

“Great, what? You want to go out?”

“No. Great, Savannah has been hanging out with Max and April all day.”

“What do Max and April have to do with anything?”

Before Jerry could answer, an SUV pulled into the driveway.
