Chapter Nine

Zander paced the length of the cabin’s main room. He wished he hadn’t listened to Brandon and had gone to the appointment anyway. Sitting in the cabin alone, waiting for details, was about to drive him insane.

Colton’s face didn’t worry him. Whether the shifter chose surgery or not—it mattered little to Zander. Colton was their mate, regardless of what was on the outside. He only worried about Colton’s emotional state. Making that kind of choice could be difficult and after talking to the shifter twice now, Zander sensed a lot of emotions simmering under the surface.

The male barely knew Zander or Brandon, but it didn’t change the fact Zander wanted to be there simply to comfort.

Or perhaps it was another selfish need within himself.

A groan rose from his chest. He was tired of browbeating himself over having a need to be closer to both his mates. He loved Brandon—and cared about Colton—why shouldn’t he want to be next to them as much as possible?

The cabin door opened, and Brandon entered.

The look upon Brandon’s face and his silence spoke volumes.

“It didn’t go well, I take it,” Zander said.

“Worse than expected,” Brandon said. “I’d been adamant with Logan that Colton had to know why he was there and it had to be his choice to talk to me. They blindsided him, and he reacted exactly how I’d feared. He ended up running out of the clinic.”

Zander frowned, anger filling him. “That wasn’t fair to him. I got the feeling Jamie loves his brother.”

“He does—almost too much, I think. I’m almost positive Jamie feels some kind of guilt over Colton’s injury and wants to force the surgery to assuage that guilt.”

“Logan told us they were mere boys. It wasn’t Jamie’s fault,” Zander said.

“No—the only fault should be laid at their father’s feet.”

“Part of me is upset that male is dead. I’d like to tear into him myself—I mean, beating on innocent cubs?”

“From some of the stories I’ve been hearing, the McCreary boys weren’t exactly innocent.”

“With fathers like the ones they had, who’s surprised?” Zander spat. “They’re lucky to be alive.”

A knock sounded at the door. Brandon walked over and swung the wood open while Zander adjusted out of curiosity at their unexpected visitor.

Will stood in the doorway in full uniform. “Morning. I hate to be the bearer of bad news—but your vacation might be cut short.”

Zander glanced at Brandon before looking back to the deputy. “What’s going on?”

“The werewolves are planning to surround the wall and not allow anyone out. Declan told me to head over here and let you know that the time is now if you plan to leave. If you want to go, I’m to escort you out. I’ve gassed up the SUV, and we can head south as soon as you’re packed.”

Brandon turned to fully face Zander. “What do you want to do?”

Panic filled Zander. He didn’t want to be a prisoner inside the walls of Bear Mountain. He wanted the option of going home.
