The Final Assault

Riley’s first instinct was to scream for help, but he restrained himself not sure of how the animal that was standing in front of him would react. Slowly, Riley eased himself back over the edge trying to add some distance between him and the teeth. He finally reached a point where he would either fall back down the edge of the cliff or have to hold tight. He looked around frantically for something to use for a weapon, in case the animal came any closer, but he was unable to locate even a small stone.

Chel peered around the rocks she was hiding behind to see the large furry wolf, inching its way towards Riley. She saw Riley back over the edge some, but Chel knew he couldn’t go any farther without slipping all the way back down.

She looked around as if hoping a door would open up that she could just walk through and be back home, but nothing like that happened. Without any other idea’s coming to her mind, Chel dropped down to her knees and began to pray.

“Dear Father, please protect Riley right now from the wolf. He looks awful hungry, but don’t let Riley be his lunch. Help us to get home safely. In Jesus name, Amen.” Chel remained sitting in the dust, not sure what else to do. A cool breeze sent a chill up her back and she shivered. She had to come up with a plan.

Riley, deciding not to be eaten easily pulled off his baseball cap and began to wave it towards the dog.

“Shooo, puppy, back.” Riley called out to the wolf.

The wolf instantly reacted to the hat and snapped it quickly in hits powerful jaws. Riley released the hat immediately and jumped, loosing his balance on the ledge, he began to slide back over the edge.

“Chel, help,” Riley called out.

Chel began to shiver at Riley’s plea. She didn’t know what to do.

The wolf began shacking the hat violently back-and-forth with its head. He chewed on it and barked several times at the hat as he tore it apart with his teeth and paws.

“Chel!” Riley called out again, “I can’t hold on.”

Chel sat stone cold still, not sure what to do next.

Quickly destroying the hat, the wolf noticed the scent of food coming from Riley’s bag. The wolf sniffed around the bag for a moment, then latched on tight with his large mouth and quickly trotted off.

Riley was not sure if Chel was okay or if she had run away, struggled to hold on to the ledge. His arms hurt, but he didn’t know what else to do, so, he closed his eyes and began to pray, “Lord, please help me, and protect Chel from the wild animal.”

Chel, deciding that things had quieted down enough, took another peak around the rocks that she had been hiding behind. Her eyes fell instantly on the shredded remains of Riley’s hat. Tears began to well up in her eyes when she saw no signs of her best friend.
