Alice had barely spoken to me for the last three days. I couldn’t blame her if she hated me. I knew that she knew what had happened between me and Kayla. Alice wasn’t stupid. But she wasn’t being communicative, either.

I was stewing in my office when Alice tapped on the door. She let herself in before I could tell her I was busy.

“We need to talk,” she said. She approached me slowly, cautiously.

“I’m sorry about what happened,” I said. It wasn’t the first time I’d apologized to her since that fateful afternoon. But I still hadn’t directly admitted my infidelity.

“I know you kissed her,” Alice replied bluntly. “I saw you kissing her. And Kayla knows that I saw.”

“Alice, I’m really sorry,” I said, staring into her eyes instead of hanging my head in regret. I was sorry, but not ashamed. I was willing to own up to my mistakes.

I felt like I was looking at a stranger. Alice had an indecipherable expression on her face.

“Don’t be sorry,” she said calmly. “She’s what you want, isn’t she? You always wanted a woman like her and somehow, you ended up with…me.”

“Alice, please. Stop.” She was doing it again — putting herself down, acting pathetic and humiliated and helpless, trying to gain my sympathy.

“Let me talk.” Her voice was firm and self-assured, which took me by surprise. “Drew, I want you to be happy. You know how much I love you. But I don’t…deserve you.
