Chapter four

Burning Bright

Olivia Hardin got off the plane in St. Louis and glanced around her. Her light brown eyes were particularly golden in the light coming in the windows. She sighed and made her way with her dark blue rolling carryon suitcase. She always traveled light. Today, she was coming home after spending a couple weeks on vacation. Well, it was not really a vacation. It felt good to get away for a while from the Healing House. She made no noise as she walked because she always wore sensible nursing shoes. She never understood humans who wore heels. She’d always found them uncomfortable, and she didn’t understand why anyone would put themselves in pain for their looks.

She got outside and made her way to the taxi station. She found one easily and gave the address of the Healing House. The taxi driver was no nonsense, and grunted when he took it down and punched it into the car’s GPS system. She leaned back and ran a hand over her neatly pulled back platinum hair. It was nearly white but carried a bit of a blond tone to it. Enough to blend in with the humans around her and not far from her natural color when she was undisguised.

A short while later, they pulled up to the Healing House and the taxi driver glanced at her.

“Yer sure this is where ya wanna go?” he said.

Olivia smiled and nodded, getting out of the car with her carryon to stand on the sidewalk. She waved at the driver as he pulled away with a very confused face. She turned and stared at the building, understanding his trepidation at leaving someone here. It looked like a rundown two-story house. There was junk in the yard, and despite the windows being boarded up, the front door looked secure. It wasn’t a safe-looking place, that was for sure.

She hummed to herself as she headed up the sidewalk and held her hand over the lock. A slight golden glow encompassed the knob and the door opened. It was a simple trick, one easily learned by Human Alchemists and their ilk. It was effective at keeping the humans they didn’t want around out of the place.

“Olivia! You’re back today!” one of the nurses said just inside the entrance.

Olivia nodded, seeing it was Harriett Baker. She was wearing light blue scrubs, as she had been a human nurse before she became a Healer. She was shorter than the taller Olivia, and a little on the plump side. It looked good on her, though, and she had no end to her stories about her various boyfriends. She carried herself with confidence and grace and was a genuine person. It attracted the attention of people.

“How have things been while I was gone?” she asked, looking around and not seeing anyone else.

The entry looked much like a standard hospital. It was tiled with white flecked linoleum, and the walls were a light beige with a light blue chair rail. To the right of the door, several plain chairs sat together, making a waiting room.
