If only Abby were there. Her nose would surely lead him directly to Marcus. Judging by the trajectory of the bullets, the shooter had been on a higher floor of the apartment building on the opposite side of the street. Two occupants rushed out of the building and Ray caught the door. âGet back inside your apartment. Itâs safer to stay put. Did you see anything?â
âNo, just heard bullets.â The wide-eyed women rushed back into their apartments before he moved to go upstairs. Ray pressed his back against the stairwell, his hand on his weapon. Usually shooters avoided using the elevator, wanting a hasty, unnoticed escape. He rounded the second-floor landing and turned off his radio, lest the loud updates give away his location. A door opened and a teenager popped his head out.
âGet back inside,â Ray ordered.
The boy, dressed in a hoodie and loose jeans, frowned. âThe other cop said that, too, but the shooting has stopped, right? He had one of those ghost guns, a modified AR-15. Thatâs what did it, right?â He eagerly nodded as if it was the coolest thing heâd ever seen before.
A shiver ran up Rayâs spine. There was no way that anyone couldâve beaten him to the location unless an off-duty officer lived in the building, which was a possibility. âWhatâd the other cop look like?â
The boy folded his arms across his chest and smirked.
Ray didnât have time to deal with stubborn attitudes and games. He gestured at himself. âDid the cop have everything on him that I do?â
The boyâs lips turned downward, surprised at the question. âNot the belt or the cam you got. Was it a fake cop?â He wavered between excited and upset in a heartbeat. âAm I on camera?â He stepped back inside. âNah, man. I donât want to be on camera.â
Ray stuck his foot in the doorway. âWhyâd you say âghost gunâ?â
âYou could totally tell it was made by one of those digital printer things Iâve seen on television.â
âDid you see his face?â
âNot really. He had his hat down and wore sunglasses.â
âStay inside for now.â Ray didnât take the time to ask any more questions. He spun on his heel and ran toward the stairway. He turned his radio back on and pressed the button. âSuspect impersonating officer. On foot out of building. Possibly carrying ghost rifle.â
Ever since a company released aluminum milling machines specifically designed to make the bodies of AR-15s, untraceable guns had become the bane of law enforcement. If Marcus had one of those guns and had gotten away, ballistics on the bullets wouldnât help them at all.
He launched himself down the stairwells and burst out the door that led to the alley. On a hunch, he sprinted away from the scene, even as he spotted officers running his way. He turned the corner and out of his peripheral spotted telltale navy sticking out of a Dumpster lid.
Ray grabbed his gun, knowing that sometimes desperate criminals hid in Dumpsters until the coast was clear.
