When Sapph said shopping, I assumed it was for a few silly things. Iâm not sure why that was my first assumption, but it was.
Instead, she took me to a small shop on the strip, the door decorated with a crystal ball, bells and some sort of gray, mossy herb that hung from a string.
As I walked into the shop, the bells chiming behind me, I was brought into what felt like a warm embrace.
I shut my eyes and inhaled deeply the familiar scent of lavender and incense.
I watched my mother practice witchcraft behind closed doors and in private. My father didnât approve, and there was always tension between the two. My aunt, however, had no problem telling my mother she was evil, and without her wits.
My father had a wandering eye, and I believed his hateful words only made my mother cling to her practice even more.
My stomach clenched at the thought of their explosive fights when he would catch her.
âOkay, you need a black candle, salt, anointing oil, and red pepper flakes. We are going to do a return to sender spell tonight and a protection jar,â Sapph said, bending down to look at a collection of white crystals in various shapes and sizes, âAmethyst is a great protector, carry it around with you in your purse and charge it under the moon every now a then,â She stood, handing me a small bar etched with the cycle of the moon.
As soon as Sapph set it in my hands, I felt its life. I felt the vibration run through my fingertips, vibrating to my toes. I clutched it to my chest and held it there, closing my eyes.
I can feel it.
âHow is it going to protect me?â I asked, following her to another wooden stand lined with tinctures of oils.
I thought of the box in my bag and the crystal that was painful to wear at times because it made me think of my mother. This explained why my mother promised me protection if I wore it.
She laughed lightly, âYou have so much to learn, and you have so much potential! Iâm excited just thinking of it,â She clapped her hands together, eyes still trained on the shelf.
Why me? Why was everyone I met so eager to discover what I was made of? There was absolutely no way any of them knew my secret. The only person I told was Marisela, and even then, I didnât share the details. Shit, I didnât even know what was going on. I needed to get to Etienna before anyone found out, and I was hauled off to jail for the rest of my life. I had no idea how long this crew would continue to protect me before they figured out I was just as much a monster as the vampires.
I thought back to when I first stepped into The Scorpionâs Stinger, and Alex bombarded me. Only, I had convinced myself that it was because I was a hot piece of ass.
