Samantha and I spend the next few hours going over her case files from memory as she recants to me the extent of the investigation into Malstrom. He’s a bad guy, I’ll give her that. I’d like nothing more than for Samantha to catch this guy, find her supervisor and come home safely. And that’s going to take a hell of a lot of effort to pull it off, but I believe we can do it.

Samantha and I pull up a map application, checking out the city streets of Madrid, Spain. Sam shows me the jail where Randall Friendly is being held, Terrence Malstrom's right-hand man. If she can get there, talk to Friendly before anyone else gets to him first, we’ll have a lead on her supervisor Alan. And from there, she’ll work her usual magic. Swoop in, save the day before anybody else even notices something’s amiss.

As she explains her plan to me, I can’t help but stare at Samantha in the low light of the evening. She’s passionate, caring. She knows what she wants out of life, and I feel truly sorry for anyone who stands in her way. As we pour over the files, copies Sam had brought in from the office, I keep stealing glances, checking her out. Honestly, she’s fucking sexy. And I know I’m getting turned on as she explains to me the international judicial processes of capturing a wanted fugitive.

After a while, I lean back in my seat, rubbing my eyes. I’m exhausted, and I know I’ve got a long flight back to D.C. ahead of me tonight. Not that I’ve got any pressing matters to attend to, I just don’t want to impose on Samantha while she’s determined and hard at work.

“How’re you holding up?” Sam asks me from across the dining table. She’s still pouring over her notes, reviewing case file after case file. I can tell she’s going to be hard at work on this long after I’m gone, and I can’t stop her from pursing the justice she believes the world’s sorely lacking.

“Fine, I’m just burnt out,” I reply. I chuckle. “This is a lot more work than I’m used to. Usually I cap out at an hour or two a day. This is…this is beyond me,” I reply. “I can’t believe how dedicated you are.”

Samantha shrugs. “All part of the package deal,” she grins up at me. “You’ll like it after the baby’s born. I’ll get really into finding them the best schools, the best healthcare. You know it’s only going to get easier after this is all said and done.”

I nod. “Still, it’d be nice to have the guarantee that you’re going to make it out safe. I’m just worried about you, is all.”

She stacks the papers she’d been reading, rifling through them as she sets them back down on the dining room table. Samantha leans back in her chair, rubs her eyes as well.

“No, you’re right. This is exhausting,” she laughs. “I still have to call into work, take some time off.
