“Miss Summers, I thought we’d lost you.” The foreman slapped her back and gave her a toothy grin.

Unable to keep the smile off my face, I shrugged. It was nice to feel appreciated. And it took my mind off … other things. That I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about.

Because we’re fated mates.

The rest of the evening was a bit of a blur in my memory. I think I said goodbye to the rest of the Quinn clan. I know I’d smiled—manically—because my cheeks hurt this morning. And Drew had driven me back to my motel room.

I know that I’d babbled. It was a trait my father thought he’d broken me of but, turns out, I’d just been waiting for the right moment to shine.

At least Drew was still talking to me, or messaging me, at least. He wanted to take me out again.

Did I want to see him again? Would that be leading him on? What if I didn’t want to be his mate, were there rules about how quickly that decision had to be made?

Did I really just question whether I wanted to be his mate?

Ten year plan.

“Uh, Miss Summers, are you okay? You’re looking a little … red.” He even sounded apologetic.

I shook myself. “I’m fine.” Gerry flinched at my snappish tone and I winced. He didn’t deserve my temper tantrum. “Sorry, I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

“If you need someone to talk with…” At my horrified look, he chuckled. “I was offering the services of my wife, Martha.”

Laying a hand on his arm, I patted him, hoping it expressed my thanks for his offer. “Thanks, but I’m fine.”

Luckily, that was the extent of Gerry’s willingness to discuss my mental state, and he launched into a rundown on the state of affairs with the construction job.

I held up a hand, halting him mid-flow. “Wait, the architect’s already been here and gone again this morning?” I frowned, checking the organizer app on my phone. “I needed to speak to him. I thought he was coming by this afternoon.”

Gerry rolled his eyes. “He’s not one to stick to the rules, as you well know. It’s the artist in him, I think.”

The architect, a Mr. Byrne, had flaked on all my other visits to the job site, so I let the comment slide, despite it being weird. “I need to meet with him.” I jabbed at my screen, trying to bring up the relevant information. “The last minute changes he wants aren’t economically viable. They would break our budget and I can’t justify the expense, not for the sake of…” I squinted, then wrinkled my nose. “Does that say aerial playground?”

“Yep. Sounds like fun.”

“Fun,” I repeated blankly. “This is a high end shopping mall. The fun is the shopping.”

Gerry shoved his hands in his pockets and looked everywhere but at me. He was hiding something, I could tell.

I crossed my arms and tapped my foot. I’d seen Aunt Tabby use this technique with spectacular results last night.
