Chapter nine
Gharp and Sophii
Corvu spends a little longer than half an hour teaching me how to keep a grip on my sword, but I am otherwise left with more bruises than when I fell off that cart last week. I am here for so long already. It means I have missed a few shifts at work as well, so surely someone will have noticed I am missing by now. It is not that I expect anyone to come looking for me, I just do not want to be forgotten. Maybe I should try harder to make more friends. I hate to think I will go completely unnoticed. I have a good friend, we grow up at the orphanage together. She is adopted though, but we never lose touch. She calls me once a month and visits every few months or so. She lives in New Jersey so the subway ride can be a little long. I miss her.
It is night, and even though we do not have to worry about Skellyâs anymore, I am still worried about sleeping in the middle of a forest. It is not as cold as it was a couple of nights ago, which is a relief, but I cannot sit as close to the fire as I would like to without getting a mouthful of smoke. Gecko finds a spot that is next to a crevice, giving us an advantage should anyone try to approach us from that side. He is dead asleep on top of the boulder we build the fire next to. It has been a long day, especially with our interrupted sleep the night beforehand.
âHey,â Corvu somewhat whispers, coming over to sit down next to me against the fallen tree stump. In his hand, he holds a canteen, which he passes to me. I smile and accept it, but after taking a sip, I realize it is not water but grapey? It is very sweet.
âWhat is this?â I ask him.
âDo you not have wine in your world?â He questions, raising a curious brow.
âOh,â I respond, a little surprised, I was not expecting him to carry around wine.
âSophii gave me a couple of these, she picked the grapes and Gharp did the rest.â
âThat is really cool.â I smile, taking another small sip.
ââCoolâ?â
âYeah, that is our slang for saying something is really awesome or amazing.â He nods, a hint of a smile sitting on his lips. Taking the canteen from me, he takes a sip as well. I normally do not like sharing food and drink because of germs, but in this world, dying from sharing a canteen of wine is not my highest concern. âSo, was the person you wanted to look for, your sister?â I ask him. He scoffs,
âNo, she will continue to be lost, then found, for the rest of her life,â He hands the canteen back to me once again to take a drink, âshe is a free spirit, but at least I know where she is. Sort of.â
âThen who are you looking for?â
âWell, I just kind of want to know what happened to my mother.
