Chapter 19

FOXY

“We need to talk,” I say to Theodore after he asks what my plans are for the day. Last night made me realize that I can’t just keep pushing these men away and when he called me, I decided to just go for it.

Silence answers me before he replies, “I feel like that’s a sentence no guy wants to hear from his girl, especially with the serious tone you’re using.”

I say and hear a beeping down the phone and look at my screen, it’s not my phone. “You can call me back if you want,” I tell him, in case whoever is trying to call him has something important to say.

“Nah, it’s fine. It’s just my bro,” Theodore answers, his voice quiet, and I know he’s nervous, but I doubt he’s as nervous as me right now. “How about we catch up for lunch in town? I’ve got an hour break and couldn’t think of a better person to spend it with.”

My day is pretty free at work today because my main job got canceled yesterday, so I can definitely work with that. “Sounds like a good plan, I’ll come by, and we’ll take it from there.”

We say our goodbyes and just as I hang up, my phone vibrates in my hand. Wow. My morning is busy today. I haven’t even had breakfast yet.

Beau’s number lights up, and I answer it after a big breath, might as well get two birds with one stone. “Hola.”

Before I can say more, his voice trembles down the line with a quick greeting, and I know instantly that something is seriously wrong and ask him what’s going on.

“I’m sorry for calling but I,” Beau takes a heavy breath. “I needed someone to talk to, and I couldn’t get through to my housemate. One of the young girls that have been staying at the same Miss Potts’ you were at the other day was taken this morning, and I’m devastated. What should I do? I’m meant to be keeping them safe, not providing a place to take vulnerable women from.”

His words end with a very obvious sound of heavy emotion, and it wouldn’t surprise me if his eyes were filled with unshed tears right now.

I try to focus on his words and not how his emotions are cutting me to the quick. If someone was taken, then it has to be caught on camera with his new security system. “Were your cameras working at the time?” I ask hopefully.

“Yeah. The cops have just left with a copy, but they didn’t seem to be overly concerned, and it pissed me the fuck off.” His voice hardens with every word.

My feet start pounding down the stairs as I head toward my family, who I hear talking together in the kitchen. I burst in and raise my hand to Juan with a shushing motion, and he and the rest of them go instantly silent. No doubt from my stern expression.

I put the phone on loudspeaker and say to it, with my finger still to my lips, indicating that they listen quietly.
