Practice Gratitude

It’s easy for a depressive person to look at the negative side of things. Studies show that keeping a gratitude journal and writing down things you are grateful for each day stimulates the anterior cingulate cortex in the brain (the place that connects the old, primitive brain and the newer prefrontal cortex) and helps regulate serotonin and dopamine imbalances, as well as reducing insomnia.6 Rick Hanson, in Hardwiring Happiness, suggests that it is natural for the mind to focus on the negative. We counteract that with a conscious practice of really savoring the positive experiences we do have, which rewires the neural circuitry of the brain to experience more happiness.
