CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: CHAOS

The elevator door opens to reveal two men grappling in the hall. One’s wearing a suit, the other a kutte. But I know the enemy when I see him. Twerk.

Twerk pushes his opponent at Dante when he sees us. He takes off down the hall, Babe and Shield on his tail. Before they can close in on him, a door ahead of Twerk opens and young boy steps out. Without slowing down, Twerk picks the kid up and tosses him back at Babe. Babe stumbles but catches the kid. The kid’s screams have the parents charging into the hall, blocking Shield. Twerk pulls the fire alarm before disappearing through the emergency exit. Soon the hallway overflows with people fleeing the building.

I watch long enough to see Babe hand the kid over to his parents as Shield flashes his badge to calm them. When I turn to the door, I see Evie standing just inside, staring at me. With her arms wrapped tightly around herself, I can see she’s uncomfortable. Stepping to her, I open my arms, but she takes a step back. The predator in me wants to stalk her, but the look on her face stops me. My woman is frightened. It hurts when I realize her fear isn’t just directed at Twerk.

“Who are you?” Dante asks, drawing my attention back to the man in the suit.

“Jack Strand.” He says, offering his hand. Dante ignores it. “I met Evie earlier when we were both checking in. I heard her scream and came to help.”

I glance over at Evie, who nods. “He distracted Twerk and kept him from kidnapping me.”

“Do you want me to call the police?” Jack offers, pulling out his phone.

“No.” Dante barks. “We’ve got it.”

Jack pales, but he doesn’t back down. “I think we need to call the police.” He insists.

Dante glares at him until Shield walks up and flashes his badge. “I’ve got this. You can go back to your room or join the rest of the guests outside.”

I can still hear the alarm. “Good time for us to go.” I say to Dante, who nods. “Grab your stuff.” I tell Evie, who is still too far away for my liking.

She glances between the four of us before retreating into her room. I stalk past Jack, who seems reluctant to let me follow. He won’t stop me. I smirk when he steps out of my way. Inside the room, I stop short when I spy Evie’s shoes covered in blood on the floor. When she exits the bathroom, I grab her to scan her body. “Are you hurt?” I demand, spinning her to finish my search.

“What are you doing?” She snaps, slapping at my hands. “Quit manhandling me.”

“The blood. Is it yours?” I ask her, nodding at the shoes.

She shakes her head. “No, that’s Twerk’s blood. Those were the only weapons I had.”

I pull her tight to my chest so I can bury my face in her hair.

“We need to get out of here.” Dante barks from the door.
