Chapter Twenty-Three

Rayne Mathews

Tyler didn’t come back last night.

I got a text after midnight saying he was crashing in his dorm, but he didn’t answer my follow-up. This morning he sent one line telling me he was fine.

I know last night was bad, but it hurts. He always talks to me, always has time…even when he’s at an away game. Even before we started dating, he had time to text. Something feels really wrong after that catastrophe of a dinner, and I’m trying not to panic as I get to the field.

The energy in the stadium is out of control, mixing with the knot in my stomach, and a wave passes through me, tensing everything. When the screens show our team waiting, the thunder of the crowd is almost too much. Each team is undefeated, so it matters to both sides.

The fans are pumped up, but there’s a violence that wasn’t there at the beginning of the season. Every heartbeat racing together, hoping to absorb the energy from the field.

We are the glassy-eyed bystanders begging for the clash of gladiators, and when the crescendo of music hits, and our fighters break through, we explode in lust and awe, begging for blood and bone to pound the ground beneath their feet.

I’m no different. My eyes catch the form of my chosen Warrior, my stadium god, and I feel the energy in the crowd exploding my tension. The Blood and Iron pour onto the field, releasing thunder, but I’m focused on his face, his eyes; is he okay?

Tyler turns and looks at me for a split second. Wrath and torment are written all over him.

Fuck. This is bad.

The snap at the beginning releases them. Violence and focus, and Tyler plays like an animal. Dylan finds him time and again, and when he can’t, Tyler tangles with defenders.

He’s angry, and catch after catch, he leaves broken bodies behind him. He plays with none of the joy of his first few games. Beautiful to watch; scary to feel.

I’m on pins and needles through every quarter, past the end, when he heads straight to the locker room. And afterward, when family, friends, and girls wait for the team members in a large receiving room.

The short hallway leading to the locker room is filled with girls. Some are girlfriends, some are groupies, then there’s me, unsure after what happened with his dad last night. I’m nervous, so when Mike comes out and makes his way over as the team says their hellos, grabbing their girls and families, I’m almost frozen in place.

“Hey, Rayne! We blew this motherfucker out!” His hug is crushing, as usual. “Time to celebrate, and you’re coming out with us!”

“We’ll see.”

“Your boy should be done any minute. I’m pretty sure I heard him say it was a go.” He looks at me curiously. “We haven’t seen you at a party in a while.”

“I’m crazy busy. You know I don’t have time to party.”

“Yes, but your boys want to see you,” Mike says, squeezing again.

“Okay, well…”

Tyler walks out and looks at Mike’s arm around my shoulders.
