Swallow Hollow

October 10th

The crickets in the woods behind Buck's house chirped loudly as he sat on his back porch with a cigar and a snifter of scotch. This was typically his nightly routine on the nights that his wife, Lauren, worked her overnight nursing shifts.

Lauren wasn't a fan of the smell of Buck's cigars, so he reserved smoking them for the nights he had alone.

Just three years prior, when Johnny, the youngest of their kids moved out and Buck had gotten elected Sheriff, he had told Lauren that his salary was enough to sustain them both, and that there was no need for her to work anymore. She appreciated the offer but chose to keep working anyway. She loved being a nurse, despite the stress it sometimes involved.

Buck appreciated the three nights a week he had to himself, so he didn't press her on the issue. He also understood how she felt, as he loved being a cop, especially the power he was granted once elected sheriff.

Their friends often said Buck was born for the job. With his burly stature, thick mustache, and neatly kept high and tight haircut he managed with a weekly trip to the barber shop, he was practically a stereotype of what you would think of for a cop. He even had the 'take no shit' attitude that came along with it. Some people even made unofficial campaign stickers when he was running for sheriff, proclaiming 'Don't Fuck With Buck', which they proudly stuck on the rear bumper of their cars. He still had one on the wall of his garage, which gave him a smile every time he saw it.

Sitting there, Buck got lost in thought for a while before being pulled back to reality by the sound of clanging metal and music playing from the neighbor's garage.

Despite Lauren apparently making fast friends with the new neighbors, Buck had yet to officially meet them. He wasn't too keen on the thought of a gay couple living right next door.

The tall privacy fence between the two yards made it almost impossible for Buck to be nosey, but he remembered that the garage had a window that faced the woods behind the house.

Shaking his head and finishing the last of the scotch in his glass, Buck stood up and made his way to the tree line behind his house.

As Buck got closer, he could hear the music a bit more clearly. He scoffed at the realization that it was what he would call 'faggy dance music.'

Rounding the corner of the fence and back wall of the garage, Buck froze at what he saw through the window. There, on a weight bench, sat his neighbor in only a tight pair of shorts. The man was very toned and muscular. His skin glistened with sweat and his biceps flexed as he lifted the dumbbells in his hands.

Not wanting to be noticed spying, Buck took a few steps back into the trees and continued to watch his scantily clad neighbor work out.
