The night before a big gaff was always the roughest.

When you were planning a job, your mind was full of possibilities, hard at work, preparing. And when you were pulling the gaff, there was no time to think at all. You were in the thick of it, in full focus.

But the night before . . . that was when the worries crept into your mind. You’d already done the scouting, the setup, the rehearsal. Now there was nothing to do but wait—and think of all the ways you could fail.

This had always annoyed the Old Man. We’d be sleeping by the fire—or, rather, he’d be sleeping by the fire; I was wide awake—and he’d know me so well that he’d suddenly call across the campsite. Stop it, boy.

I didn’t say anything, I’d protest.

But you thought it. They can hear you fidgeting all the way in Westport.

So I’d lie there, completely still. As if that would fool him.

Boy . . . he said threateningly.

I can’t help it, I said.

Breathe, he said. Just breathe.

Usually, that worked. Just breathe. In and out. Relax. Sleep.

Dream.
