Chapter 23

Home of the Wayward Soul

By the time I had found the cabin, the sky had shifted to red and orange overhead. Reaching the side of the house, I dropped the carcass and leaned against the wall. I was covered head to toe with blood, sweat, dirt, and now fur. I’ve never felt so disgusting… Stumbling over to the well, I pumped the handle several times before the gurgle of water started to groan out of the pipe. Come on, you damned thing. Don’t be clogged again. Water began to trickle, and at last, it rushed forward, smacking the trough. I ducked my head under and started to scrub my face and arm. The wounds had stopped bleeding, but the gashes on my forearm and lower leg looked gruesome. These are going to scar and stick around for a while.

Snorting, I pumped the handle a few more times and rinsed the wounds in my leg. So much for these breeches. I’ll have to buy new ones. Something white and yellow protruded from a portion of my arm, and I yanked it from my flesh. Definitely not giving this fang back.

I ripped the shreds of fabric off, rinsing them before using them as bandages. Needing more, I puffed out my cheeks. Fuck it. What does it matter? They aren’t wearable like this. Shimmying off the breeches, the only clothing I had on. I began to rip the fabric into bandaging. Never going to work the field in only my pants ever again. No boots, no shirt, no knife. Fucking out here with my sack swinging in the breeze and not a person to bend over for me, I thought bitterly. Lugging my leg into the trough, I pumped the handle and scrubbed the wounds that riddled my calf and shin. I’m going to walk with a limp if this doesn’t heal right. Frowning, I glowered at the wolf carcass as I wrapped up my leg. You and your fucking buddies thought you had easy pickings. Don’t you worry, darling. I’m going to make you… make you…

I licked a fang as my mind ran through a catalog of options, many of the images from Hodges Haberdashery still fresh in my mind. Oh, I have options for days, but I need to get this healing now if I’m going to get back in time. While taking a step forward, the wounds stung, and I muttered curses. By the Devoted Sister, next time, toss me a blade if you want to see me fight. And you, Sacrificial Daughter! Making a naked man think he’s dead is fucked up. May the Mother of Life punish you both! Limping, I grabbed the wolf and dragged it over to where I had set up a dressing rack. With the wolf straddled and hung, I hobbled to the cabin and inside searched for the skinning knife and leather working kit I had left behind.

Upon finding it, I eyed a pair of worn-out pants tossed over a chair. My eyes rolled back as I tried to remember.
