The back porch was covered with a slanting roof, but it wasnât screened in, and the railings and back steps had been broken for years. Bits of paint were barely hanging onto the splintery old boards by the skin of their teeth, and I felt the loose flakes mixed in with broken glass beneath my fingers in the dark.
In an effort to stand up, I got on my knees, but immediately fell back on my heels as the pain ripped through my entire body, causing me to cry out into the night like an injured wolf.
There was no way around it, as I couldnât rely on my shaking legs alone to get me up. I was going to have to use my hands to prop myself up before my legs could be invited to the party.
Trying to put as little weight as I possibly could on my fingertips and feet, I slowly made my way to a standing position. I couldnât see it in the blackness that surrounded me, but I knew blood was now coming from my hands and feet too, and not just from my knees.
I wasnât sure how far the glass had scattered, but I was pretty sure I was standing in the midst of it. So, with a deep breath, I used every bit of strength I had to leap out of the sea of broken glass, hoping to fly over the sharks and piranhas and land further along the porch without being bitten. I managed to clear most of it, but I felt a nibble or two upon landing.
The night was strangely quiet, and if it werenât for the unbelievable horror I was currently experiencing, it may have been described as serene. It was then that it dawned on me; if I stayed out here, and didnât die of hypothermia first, the flakes of paintâand maybe even the glassâwould most definitely be my next meal.
I bit my lower lip as I turned and looked out into what I knew was our backyard, but I couldnât see a thing through the black blanket of sky that was draped over it. I didnât have my getaway plan quite ready yet, and I really wanted to be better prepared, but it was clear that the exact day and time for me to run had just been chosen for me, and before I could talk myself out it, I leaped off the porch and took off into the darkness.
The cold night air and my pumping adrenaline made me feel both manic and superhuman. My bare feet crunched through the frost as I ran, but it was nothing compared to the pain of the cuts and bruises I was accustomed to on the soles of my feet.
The nearest police station was located across the street, diagonally, from my school, which was a little more than two miles away from the yellow house. I knew exactly how to get there, even in the dark, so I wasnât worried about finding my way.
