Chapter Four:
The Fairy Nurse
I
n the small town of Coolgarrow there lived a farmer and his wife. The lovely couple had three children, one of which was just an infant. The farmerâs wife was a good wife, but there were many who thought she was not as dedicated to her family as she should be. In truth, she loved her family, but any time spent praying or in church had always seemed too time-consuming and tedious for her. When she did fall to her knees at night to pray, more often than not the farmer found his wife sound asleep without concluding her prayers.
On the farm there had been distress amongst the animals, and there was word of a fairy man that could be of some help. One day, instead of attending church with her spouse and children, she opted to meet with this fairy man in concern for her livestock.
This meeting took much longer than she anticipated and when she finally did arrive at church, every one gave her quite the stare! The rest of the day she was sincerely apologetic, for she knew her husband was feeling shame for her actions and she loved him dearly.
Later that very same night the farmer was awakened by awful screams coming from his childrenâs room. âMother! Mother!â they cried out.
He turned over and found that his wife was no longer beside him. He went to the bedside of his children and asked them what happened to their mother and why they were crying for her.
The eldest child, fear in his eyes, said that he had seen his mother surrounded by small, well-dressed people who escorted her outside and into the night. Try as they did, however, they could find no trace of her or the little people who were supposedly with her.
Many days passed without anyone hearing a word of her whereabouts. With her gone, it had been a troubled time. The children were minded by a neighbor where possible, while the infant was cared for by a nurse. And still, nothing was heard from the farmerâs wife.
A month and a half after her disappearance, the farmer was leaving for the fields early one morning when a neighborly woman grabbed his attention by the roadside. She had a grim look about her as she began to tell him a most disturbing tale.
âLast night right before I fell asleep, a horseâs whinny from outside stirred me from my bed. A knock at the door brought me to find a tall, dark man on a large horse who beckoned me to follow him. He said that there was a lady who had a great need of my skills and that we had to make haste. I threw on my cloak and barely had time to close the door before he had whisked me up onto the horse behind him.
âWhere is this lady who demands my presence?â I asked him.
âYou will know before long,â he answered. Then he drew his fingers across my eyes, and all light was snuffed out.
