WHAT CBD CAN DO: Over years of research, scientists have found that CBD engages with the endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation and oxidation in organs and systems throughout the body. A 2013 study in the British Journal of Pharmacology showed its role in relaxing arterial walls, helping lower plaque formation, increasing blood flow, and protecting the arteries against damage from inflammation. All these points help lower blood pressure and counteract hypertension, which leads to heart disease. Another study with more than 4,500 people showed that cannabis users had higher levels of good cholesterol (HDL); and research in the 2015 journal Obesity analyzed 700 Inuit cannabis users, showing both a rise in HDL and a drop in levels of bad cholesterol, or LDL. CBD is also a well-known antioxidant, which protects healthy cells from damage. Scientists see a potential role in protecting the heart from cardiomyopathy, sometime triggered by diabetes, in which the heart muscle becomes rigid so it can’t pump blood efficiently through the body. Finally, hemp seed oil, which may be purchased in a health food store, is packed with heart-protective omega-3s.
