CHAPTER 4
At the first taste of Joel’s poisoned blood, Erik had feared the worst. It tasted bitter and thin, and even though he spit out every mouthful, it left a sour aftertaste that had him wanting to string Travis up all over again. But then Joel had uttered his name, and Erik had been transfixed by those thick, dark lashes fluttering against his cheeks, the light he had fallen for before he’d even thought of siring Joel reappearing, and Erik had known everything was going to be all right.
With that realization, however, came the first rush of guilt that this had happened to his lover in the first place. They were as exclusive as vampire couples came, but that didn’t mean they didn’t occasionally have their forays into solo games. He 44

hadn’t even noticed Joel’s absence over six months previous until he realized almost a week had passed since Joel had come home. Concern changed to worry. Worry to panic.
It had taken far too long to track the path back to Travis Canavan. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place, no matter what Joel claimed.
Erik kept him in the kitchen as long as he could. He held him close, relishing the way his slighter frame fit so well against Erik’s larger body. He stroked up and down the sinuous back, ignoring the fresh scars to focus on how familiar it felt, how right. He drowned in slow, lazy kisses, relearning the mouth that had first captivated him with its playful smile.
He couldn’t wait to see the carefree smile again. That would be a sign that the worst was behind them.
More than anything else, Erik encouraged Joel to talk. Not about his captivity, or the time they were apart. Reminiscing.
Reliving memories that they shared, favorite kills, favorite cities. It was halting at first, but as he fed Joel more and more blood, it loosened his tongue, until the vampire he held almost sounded like the one he had lost.
That had been the second hardest part of Joel’s absence.
The loneliness had been deadly, but existing in such a silent world had been almost more so. Joel’s return meant no more quiet.
A glance at the clock warned him of the passing time.
“It’s only a couple hours until dawn,” he said. “Are you ready to face Travis?”
Joel brushed the hair out of his face. “I am. What are you 45

going to do to him?”
“I promised him pleasure.” Erik shrugged. “The man likes to be bitten, so we fuck him senseless, then feed, I figure.”
Erik watched for any signs of weakness as Joel stood, but he seemed fine. In fact, he seemed eager. “I’m gonna fuck him.”
“I’m guessing you haven’t done that before.”
Joel snorted. “No. Travis didn’t just rely on the serum to make sure we…all us pets…knew our place.”
They were halfway down the hall to the dungeon when Joel’s words sunk in. “You’ve seen the others?” He ground to a halt and extended his senses. “Are they here?”
Joel shrugged. “He’s got places all over the city.
