I woke the next morning to the sound of Sylvester singing carols at a pitch that would have put off even the most avid karaoke goer. I took a leaf out of Shaw’s book and cast a soundproofing spell so I could get a bit more sleep, but my mind was now thoroughly wide awake. Giving up, I went downstairs to the kitchen. Aunt Adelaide and Estelle were both early risers, but there was no sign of Aunt Candace nor her vampire companion when I found Estelle making breakfast in the kitchen.

“Did those two ever come back last night?” I asked as I joined her.

“They did,” she confirmed. “Very late. Isn’t Aunt Candace supposed to be giving you a magic lesson today?”

“Technically.” My aunt was an erratic teacher at the best of times, and I was generally better off when left to my own devices. “I think we’re starting on potion making. If she doesn’t come downstairs, I can just read the textbook instead.”

“I can help,” Estelle offered. “I miss teaching, so it’s no bother. I was thinking of volunteering at the university, actually, if I can fit it in around work at the library.”

“And organising social events too,” I added. “You weren’t thinking of doing another PhD as well?”

“Maybe.” She gave a wry grin. “I know. Cass called me a weirdo when I suggested it.”

“So am I,” I reminded her. “I would do a lot more studying if things didn’t keep blowing up. I’ve spent longer rereading Aunt Candace’s books this week than textbooks.”

Let alone my dad’s sorely neglected journal. I was starting to think I’d need to exile myself to a desert island to finish the translation.

Estelle and I were finishing up breakfast when Aunt Candace came sailing into the kitchen wearing a wide smile. “It’s a lovely day, isn’t it?”

“Where’d you end up going last night?” I asked her.

“Around,” she answered cryptically. “Relax, Rory. I didn’t set foot in the Cocktail Cauldron.”

Hmm. “Where’s Jaxon?”

“Sleeping, of course. I procured him a coffin and a guest room.”

“And then you’re going to get rid of him. Right?”

“We’ve hardly got to spend any time together,” she said indignantly. “You aren’t willing to give him a chance; that’s your problem.”

“You were out all night, weren’t you?” Estelle said. “You’ve had plenty of time.”

Yeah, she’s definitely under his spell again. Could we banish Jaxon without her input now that he was back in the library? If so, we’d probably have to carry the coffin up to the fourth floor, which was not ideal.

“You’re just jealous.”

“We really aren’t,” I said. “Come on. Can you think of the long-term consequences of summoning a fictional character? It’s not like he can stay long-term.”

“I don’t see why not.”

“The longer he stays, the more likely it is that people will figure out where he came from,” I said. “Evangeline is already suspicious.”

“Yes, and don’t think I’ve forgotten you sent her after me last night.”

“Because she showed up asking questions about the new vampire in town,” I said. “I had to tell her he was fictional so she wouldn’t try to recruit him to join her.
