CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

Inside Suzy’s limousine, the luxurious riches of the interior combined with the comforting greenery outside allowed her to feel more relaxed, making her feel nostalgic. The fresh breeze from the air conditioning unit and the lustrous smell emanating from the cream leather recliners reminded Suzy of when she was a teenager, riding high in her leather saddle atop a Pantanal stallion with her Stetson and hide breeches, trotting along the river corridors, gallery forests and planalto uplands of Brazil with the gaucho cowhands, trekking through the luscious countryside with her mother and father to spy a rare giant anteater. And after a day exploring the wildlife and ecosystem of Brazil, varied and astonishing in its greenery and majesty, the moist night air carried the aroma from the rotisserie barbecue, heralding the magical taste of churrascaria steak washed down with freshacai juice.

They soon crossed the border into Oxfordshire. As the viridian green countryside whizzed past the limousine windows, Suzy glanced over the driver’s shoulder to make sure Tom’s car was still with her. Piper’s insistence that she and Tom must not be seen together was all very well – she knew the University was all-powerful when it wanted to be, and her PhD depended on the leniency negotiated on her behalf by the Professor. But surely, having to take two separate blacked-out limos was going too far? Not for the first time in the past few days, an uncomfortable thought took shape in her mind. Piper must have explained this separation necessity to Morcom and the Colonel – but why would they have bothered with what to them would seem such a trivial thing? And yet they clearly had listened – otherwise they wouldn’t be laying on two separate cars like this. No, she had a growing nagging feeling that the truth was somewhat less to do with her and Tom and more to do with the whole escapade. In fact, she wondered if Morcom himself had insisted that they travel and work separately from now on; that way, if one of them was killed, they still had the other to keep pursuing the assassin? She shivered at the thought of being regarded as no more than a disposable asset.

Suddenly the car braked to a halt. They had reached the outskirts of Oxford at the end of the Botley Road, and had stopped in front of a smart-ish block of new apartments and shops, affluent but suburban. On the corner was the Java Bean Café, nestled between the Lucky Lucy Nail Bar and a rather dingy-looking accountant’s office.

Tom jumped out of the first vehicle and was beckoning her to get out as well. She popped the door lever and sprung out of the back seat.

“What is it?” she shouted.

“Shush! Come on!” he said in a loud whisper.

She ran over to find out what he wanted, crouching slightly as if trying to avoid Piper’s detection. She needn’t have worried.

“Get going! QUICK! QUICK!” Piper leaned out of the back door of the limo to shout at Suzy and Tom.
