There is no vocal prelude to a hiss. But there is a certainty that unless the aberrant behaviour ceases pretty much instantly, an attack will follow. Perhaps wisely, cats hiss at each other far more than at humans. There has been some speculation that as early domesticated cats were venerated and encouraged by Egyptians for their snake-killing abilities, cats learnt to use a snake’s noise in the same weapon-like manner. When you see kittens playing with each other you will hear them attempt to hiss. At just two weeks old kittens can hiss, which is a whole week ahead of their being able to purr and, being that small and frail, the ability to pretend to be something dangerous is likely to be a valuable resource. A hissing cat also shows its teeth and tigers hiss in the same way when they feel insecure or threatened.
