“This,” I pant, “is a beginner trail?”

Trevor laughs, but even he’s breathing a little hard. “Yep.”

“Then what do the hard ones look like?”

“No clear paths, for one. Lots of rocky, steep inclines you have to climb. In fact, in one area, it’s so steep they put in a long rope to help hikers get up and down without falling and breaking their necks.”

“Wow.” I gaze ahead at the hard, packed dirt path before us. It’s steep and twisty and there are a few places of short, rocky inclines, but compared to what Trevor just described, I’ll take this. “I wonder how many hikes it would take before I could tackle something like that.”

“You’ll get there,” he says cheerfully, then smiles at me. “Hey, it’ll give you a reason to come back.”

I return his smile. As if you’re not reason enough…

There’s a stereotype that writers are recluses. That’s not true with a lot of writers I know. They adhere to traditional working hours, they’re present for their families, they have hobbies and still enjoy a social life.

In my case? I’d say it’s true.

Sure, I do some traveling for conferences and to meetings. I’ve been on podcasts, interviewed for YouTube and other social media channels, and have done book signings. But those events are few and far between. Most of the time, I get up in the morning, change into my “daytime” pajamas, work like mad until I’ve lost track of time and it’s dark outside again, then go to bed. Rinse. Repeat.

As you can imagine, that sort of self-imposed hell doesn’t do well for a healthy social life. And then when you throw a burglary on top of that, well. It’s the equivalent of throwing accelerator on top of an already smoldering trash heap.

The concept of “dating” has been foreign to me for some time now. I have dated in the past, but when the umpteenth guy found a new way to disappoint me, I decided I had enough and threw myself into my work. That was when I hit my first best-seller list, and I haven’t looked back.

But being with Trevor makes me feel something I haven’t felt in a long time—hope. Anticipation. Excitement. With the same assurance that I know tree leaves are green and the sky is blue, I know he’s got a good soul, a good heart. I can feel it, and every fiber of my intuition hums with pleasure in his presence.

That’s why I kissed him last night.

It was a spontaneous thing to do for someone who skirts spontaneity at all costs under normal circumstances. But coming to Magnolia Mountain in the first place was a spontaneous thing to do. Deciding to charge outside and meet my “prowler” head on was spontaneous. Inviting Trevor to dinner was spontaneous.

So why not continue the theme of this entire trip?

His lips were warm, soft, and yielding. The kiss was the sweetest I’ve ever had, made all the sweeter when, in the beat after his initial surprise stiffened his body,
