Max and Julie went to the Sand Trap restaurant near the golf course to get away from the insanity near the beach. Since everyone went off to the beach except a few employees, it was very quiet. It’s an outdoor dining area located directly across the street from the ninth hole of the golf course and it’s almost mandatory to stop in for a drink after a round of golf. They ordered a couple of bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwiches with fries before Max got them a couple of rum and cokes from the bar.

“I’m sorry about all this stuff with Crazy George,” Julie mentioned.

“Maybe you should be flattered… you know, to have that kind of effect on men,” he teased.

“It’s one thing to have an effect on men… normal men… quite another to have an effect on crazy men… I don’t need that kind of shit in my life,” she responded sarcastically.

A waiter brought their order to the table. “Hi Julie. Haven’t seen you on the course for a while,” he mentioned as he put the food on the table.

“Been kind of busy with work,” she replied. “I’ll make it out soon.”

“You play golf?” Max asked.

The waiter replied for her, “She’s a great golfer… don’t bet money with her, she’ll take you to the cleaners!”

They made small talk for a bit before they got to serious matters. So far, the count was at least three fishermen had gone missing, a deckhand killed, the tourist who rented the boat killed, the two college girls parasailing killed, a SCUBA diver killed and now a teenaged snorkeler eaten in front of a beach crowd. All this happening in a very short time in a location deemed to be safe.

“I heard the island has been shut down… no cruise ships until further notice… all the beaches closed… restricted travel,” Max stated.

“Yeah… this is going to really hurt the island,” Julie pointed out. “Without tourist money… well, there not much else here.”

“I’m going to tell you something in confidence… but you have to keep it to yourself,” Max cautioned.

“Okay,” she said.

He went on to tell her about the Navy connection and how the Navy wanted Max and his crew to get rid of the creature to protect the public. He also pointed out that he didn’t really know at that point how it would be accomplished.

“Well, I don’t see how killing it can be avoided… I imagine that if you don’t it will just hang around and eat a tourist whenever it gets hungry,” she said after giving it some thought. “And… if it doesn’t get food here, where will it go next… across the channel to the LA beaches?”

“Shit… that’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that!”

“What do you mean?” asked Julie.

“We’ve closed the beaches… the very place it was feeding. If we don’t provide it with some easy-to-get food, it’s going to seek food elsewhere and we won’t be able to find it so we can kill it! Let’s go!”

Where are we going?”

“Back to the ship.
